Herbert George Mavars Jr.'s Obituary
Herbert George Mavars Jr., aged 93, passed away peacefully in Georgetown, DE, on January 10, 2025. Born on July 9, 1931, in Washington D.C., he led a life marked by service, dedication, and kindness.
After serving his country as a PFC in the Army Reserve Artillery, Herbert found his calling as a locksmith at the United States Post Office, where he worked until retirement. Respected within his trades, he was also a committed member of the Elks Lodge, the Moose Lodge, and the American Legion, reflecting his strong sense of community and camaraderie.
Herbert was passionate about many activities, including golfing, bowling, and square dancing, which brought him joy and a sense of connection with friends and family. He was the ideal family man—loving, kind, and gentle. His legacy lives on through his daughter-in-law, Holly Lee-Mavars, his cherished grandchildren, Shyloh, Emma, Cole Mavars, Gretchen Moses, and Jonathan Moses. He rejoins in peace his late parents, Herbert and Pauline Mavars; sister, Marian Alonzo; daughter, Dolores Mihausen; and son, Herbert G. Mavars III.
Herbert's presence will be profoundly missed, yet his memory remains a guiding light for all who knew him.
A Memorial Service will be held on Friday, January 31, 2025, at 11:00 AM at Parsell Funeral Homes Dodd-Carey Chapel, located at 307 N. Bedford St., Georgetown, DE. A visitation will begin at 10:00 AM. Burial will follow the service at the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 26669 Patriots Way, Millsboro, DE.
