Helen Louise Mechell's Obituary
Helen L. Mechell, age 86, of Lewes, DE passed away peacefully on Sunday, November 20, 2016, surrounded by her loving family. She was born Tuesday, February 18, 1930, the daughter of the late Leslie Carpenter and Lucille (Talley) Green.
A graduate of Claymont High School, Mrs. Mechell went on to work for the Claymont/Brandywine School District as a graphic designer. After retiring in 1991, she enjoyed traveling with her husband Jake, who was the love of her life. She was an avid bowler and a member of the 600 Club, as well as a competitive pinochle player. She was also a loyal Philadelphia Eagles fan and an animal lover; especially her dogs Tiny, Susy, and Foxy, who were a great comfort to her. A wonderful cook who was devoted to her family, she was a loving and caring, wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend, and she will be greatly missed by all who had the opportunity to know her.
In addition to her parents, Mrs. Mechell was preceded in death in 2010 by her beloved husband of 59 years, James "Jake" Eugene Mechell. She is survived by her son, James E. Mechell II and his wife Rebecca of Clayton, DE; daughters, Beverly Bynes and her husband Donnell of Laurel, DE, Joanne Holdren and her husband Lou of North Myrtle Beach, SC, and Diane Pokoy and her husband James of Wilmington, DE; grandchildren: Glenn Drummond, Michele White, Monty Drummond, Andrea Pettyjohn, Matthew Holdren, Jonathon L. Emerson, Kaila Mechell, Michael Mechell and Laci Mechell; greatgrandchildren, Delilah Drummond, Patrick Pettyjohn, Abigail Pettyjohn and Malana Drummond.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Wednesday, November 30, 2016 at 10:00 AM at St. Jude the Apostle Church, 152 Tulip Drive, Lewes, DE. A Viewing will be held Tuesday, November 29, 2016 at Parsell Funeral Homes and Crematorium, Atkins-Lodge Chapel, 16961 Kings Highway, Lewes, DE where friends may call from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM. Interment will be held at 2:00 PM at the Chapel of the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 2465 Chesapeake City Road, Bear, DE. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions in Mrs. Mechell's memory to St. Jude the Apostle Building Fund, 152 Tulip Drive, Lewes, DE 19958.
