Harry E. Currey's Obituary
Harry "Woodie" E. Currey, Jr., age 84, of Rehoboth Beach, DE and St. Petersburg, FL, passed away peacefully on Saturday, September 17, 2011, at Beebe Medical Center in Lewes, DE. He was born October 2, 1926 in Coatesville, PA, son of the late Harry E. Currey, Sr. and Minerva (Boyer) Currey.
Upon graduation from high school, Mr. Currey enlisted with the U.S. Navy. He shipped out to the Pacific when he was 19 and served his country during WW II. After the war, he returned home to graduate in 1950 from Penn State University (PSU) with a degree in Psychology. He then began his lifelong career with the DuPont Corporation retiring in 1990 as a Personnel Supervisor at the Expirimental Station.
Woodie was a member of the Penn State Alumni Assn. and the Elks Lodge No. 592 and the American Legion C.H. Berry Post No. 173, both in Tomaqua, PA. He loved all PSU sports, especially football, and he loved the Philadelphia Phillies and Eagles. The Tampa Bay Bucaneers also earned his allegiance. He was an accomplished bowler with multiple perfect games to his credit. He loved playing poker and cooking for his family and friends. Finally, he took pride in being a "Snowbird" as he always looked forward to travelling south for the winter.
Woodie and his wife relocated to Rehoboth Beach from Wilmington, DE ten years ago. They were members of Rehoboth Presbyterian Church of Midway.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Louise (Price) Currey. He is survived by his wife of 11 years, Kathleen (Sullivan) Currey; three brothers: Justin Currey (Helen) of Pine Grove, PA, Maurice Currey (Doris) of Pine Grove, and Herbert Walton (Patricia) of Wilmington, DE; one sister, Diana Brobst of Lansdowne, PA; three sisters-in-law: Gail Gale (David) of Griswold, CT, Millie Welsh (Bill) of Morton, PA, and Sue Brunhammer (John) of Lewes, DE; and many nieces and nephews.
A Celebration of Woodie's Life will be held Saturday, October 22, 2011 at 12:00 Noon, at Parsell Funeral Homes & Crematorium, Atkins-Lodge Chapel, 16961 Kings Highway, Lewes, with Rev. Keith Offen officiating. Friends may call at the funeral home beginning at 11:00 AM. Entombment will be on Monday, October 24, 1:00 PM, at Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 2465 Chesapeake City Road, Bear, DE.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to Rehoboth Presbyterian Church of Midway, 19075 Coastal Highway, Rehoboth Beach, DE 19971.
