Harriet Stallings Jarosh's Obituary
Harriet S. Jarosh, age 72, of Rehoboth Beach and Laurel, DE died peacefully with her family at her side on Friday, April 27, 2012, at Harbor Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center of Lewes, DE. She was born in Laurel, the daughter of the late John Whigham Stallings and Catherine Hitchens Stallings Marvil. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her second husband William Sharpless Hickman Jr., stepfather James Edward Marvil, MD, a sister, Nancy Hitchens Stallings, an aunt and an uncle, Betty and John Wheeler, and a cousin-in-law Karen Wheeler.
After her childhood in Laurel, Harriet moved to Brookline, MA, where she attended Lasell and Simmons colleges. After her subsequent move to Exton, PA, she acheived a Master's in Library Science at Villanova University. She eventually settled in West Chester, PA, working in the Downingtown and Malvern branches, and the Exton root, of the Chester County, PA library system. She was a founder of the first recycling center in Chester County.
When she returned to Laurel in 2006, her original job was at the Georgetown Public Library. She was next appointed Director of the Laurel Public Library, where she stayed until her retirement in 2009.
Harriet was a member St. Philip's Episcopal Church in Laurel, the American Association of University Women, The Sierra Club, and the Surfrider Foundation. She liked dining out, going to the beach, and traveling, by car, train, and ship. She enjoyed animals of all kinds, was known for her sense of humor and passionate opinions.
She is survived by two sons: John Patrick "Rick" Jarosh, Jr., of Rehoboth Beach, and William "Bill" Hickman of Ventura, CA; by Bill's wife, Julie Niceswanger Hickman, of Ventura; and two granddaughters: Katelyn Rose and Carissa Belle Hickman, of Ventura. She is also survived by a first husband, Cassandra Cleary, formerly John Patrick Jarosh Sr., of Pasadena, CA; and two cousins: Ann Wheeler Velasquez and Jack Wheeler.
Funeral Services will be held at St. Peter's Episcopal Church, Second and Market Streets, Lewes, DE at 1:00 PM, Thursday, May 3. The family will greet friends at the church beginning at noon. Internment will follow at Epworth Methodist Cemetery, Rehoboth Beach. Arrangements by Parsell Funeral Homes & Crematorium, Lewes, DE.
