Harlow M. Carson's Obituary
Harlow M. Carson, age 94, passed peacefully at his home on October 27.
He was born in Boston, Massachusetts, on April 30, 1931, son of Harlow and Jane Carson. When he was 12, the family moved to Philadelphia, where he graduated from Cheltenham High School. After graduation he began a career with the Proctor and Schwartz textile manufacturing company. Soon he met Jean Higgins, a nursing student, at the Jersey shore and they married on January 19, 1952. Their honeymoon took them to New York City where they were fortunate to see Perry Como perform.
They began their home together at 6333 North Broad Street in Philadelphia, where their son Steven was born on October 20, 1952. In 1959, they moved to Waterford, New York, where their son David was born on February 10, 1960. Harlow then changed careers and worked as a sales representative for the Prudential Insurance Company.
After retiring, Jean and Harlow moved to Lewes, Delaware in 1986. They were active members of Bethel United Methodist Church, where Harlow served as a past board member and treasurer as well as a member of the Bethel Methodist Cemetery Board. He also had served as treasurer of the Lewes Senior Center; as a registered ombudsman with the state of Delaware; as past treasurer and president of the Sweetbriar Homeowners Association; as a volunteer at Southern Delaware Hospice where he had served with the Camp New Hope program, a specialty program to help children who have suffered the loss of someone very close to them. Also, he especially enjoyed helping AIDS patients and people recovering from addiction as well as others who needed transportation to doctor and hospital appointments. At times he was able to offer support to others during times of immense grief.
In his spare time, he enjoyed fresh and saltwater fishing, traveling, and visiting with his children and grandchildren.
He was predeceased by his wife Jean on June 20, 2020 and his son Steve on September 4, 2022. Surviving is his son David who lives in St. Louis with his wife Chona, and their two children Justin and Alyssa. He is also survived by his brother Bruce, who lives in Maryland, and nephew Clark, who lives in Lewes. Clark provided a wonderful level of care for Harlow during his time in Delaware Hospice.
