Gwendolyn "Gwen" W. Fisher's Obituary
Gwendolyn "Gwen" W. Fisher, age 89, of Lewes, DE passed away on Tuesday, December 16, 2014 at Renaissance Healthcare in Millsboro, DE. She was born on June 22, 1925 in Norfolk, VA, daughter of the late Melvin L. and Elizabeth C. (Raper) Wise.
Gwen graduated as a Registered Nurse from St. Vincent DePaul Hospital School of Nursing in Norfolk, VA in 1946. Following her graduation, she embarked on a 47 year healthcare career working in various locations in Virginia, Florida, Washington D.C. and Delaware. For the first 14 years, she worked as a Medical-Surgical Nurse, then for 32 years as an Office Nurse for a Doctor and Professor of Internal Medicine in Washington D.C. For the last year of her career, she worked as a Charge Nurse at the Harbor Healthcare in Lewes, DE.
Gwen was an active volunteer at Beebe Medical Center for over 22 years serving the hospital in different capacities. She participated in the hospital's Fun Fest events and all Special Sales and any activities the hospital held for the community and staff. She was a longtime member and chairperson of the Arts & Crafts Group. She enjoyed making baby layettes, sweaters and assorted gifts for the Gift Shop. Gwen made the Cancer Survivor Quilt that is currently hanging in the Cancer Center on Route 24. She also designed and made the Helping Hands Quilt hanging behind the welcome desk at the Route 24 Outpatient Clinic.
Gwen will be remembered as a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and dear friend by all who knew her.
In addition to her parents, Gwen was preceded in death by her two brothers, Edward L. Wise and Wendell R. Wise and her daughter, Linda F. Bowen in 2006. She is survived by her daughter, Brenda F. Drake and her husband Dexter of Lewes, DE; four grandchildren: Timothy D. Drake of Milton, DE, Jason A. Drake and his wife Christine of New Castle, DE, Kevin L. Fantacci and his wife Laura of Frederick, MD and Jamie L. Bowen of Germantown, MD; three great-grandchildren: Madison L. Drake of Summerville, SC, Aubrey R. Drake of New Castle, DE and Nicholas A. Fantacci of Frederick, MD; and a son-in-law, Steve Bowen of Germantown, MD.
A Viewing will be held on Friday, December 19, 2014 from 3:00 PM to 6:00 PM at Parsell Funeral Homes & Crematorium, Atkins-Lodge Chapel, 16961 Kings Highway, Lewes, DE. Interment will be private.
The family wishes to extend their gratitude to all the staff at the Delaware Hospice for the wonderful and gentle care provided to Gwen throughout her time of need.
