Gladys E. Willey's Obituary
Gladys E. Willey, 95 years of age and a 71 year resident of Bridgeville, Delaware passed away Saturday, February 4, 2012. She had been a resident of Genesis Seaford Center since July 2011. Gladys was born March 19, 1916, in a ditch, and abandoned there. Gladys was adopted by Sarah Johnson of Greenwood, an angel in Gladys’ time of need.
Gladys married Earl C. Willey of Greenwood, DE on July 31, 1932 in Greensboro, MD. They were married for 75 years. Gladys was employed as a cashier at James Market in Bridgeville for many years. She was also later employed at Sol Klein of Bridgeville. Gladys loved to read, Pearl Buck was one of her favorite authors. She also read the Bible many times as well as devotional books daily throughout her life. Gladys loved traveling and dining out. She liked being in the company of people and her family in particular. She was a long time member of Union United Methodist Church in Bridgeville. A big disappointment for Gladys for many years of her life was that she did not know her real parents. Gladys was a happy and fun loving person who never found fault with any person. Her devout religious beliefs sustained her through many trials.
Gladys is preceded in death by her husband Earl C. Willey. She is survived by her son Harry E. Willey Sr., his wife Rose; daughter Anna Mae Hanby; son Jon Michael Willey, his wife Ursula; and son Lester H. Willey and his wife Carol. Gladys is also survived by 14 grandchildren, 27 great grandchildren and 6 great-great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at Union United Methodist Church, Laws and Market Streets, Bridgeville, DE on Thursday, February 9, 2012 at 11:00 AM. Friends may call at the church beginning at 10:00 AM. Interment will be in Bridgeville Cemetery.
