Gilbert J. Bernoski, Sr.'s Obituary
Gilbert "Gil" J. Bernoski, Sr., 84, passed away on Sunday, May 22, 2016 at the Delaware Hospice Center in Milford, Delaware, after a brief battle with cancer. He was born on July 5, 1931 in Baltimore, Maryland, son of Peter Bernoski and Elsie Gorecki Bernoski.
Gilbert served in the U.S. Navy from 1951 to 1954 and served some of that time on the USS Dyess. He worked for Conoco/Vista for 35 years and spent much of that time living in Carlyss, Louisiana and Houston, Texas. Prior to Gilbert's retirement, he and his wife, Margaret, bought a home in Georgetown, Delaware. After he retired, Gilbert worked for a while at Marsh Island Golf Course until he was hired on at DART at the Rehoboth Beach Park & Ride where he drove a bus for 16 summers. Next to his family and his dog, Benny, Gilbert's greatest joy in life was driving the bus and interacting with those who rode it. He would count down the days until the season started and he could once again get behind the wheel. Some people may also remember him as “The Christmas Tree Man”. Shortly after retiring, he opened Pine Lake Christmas Tree Farm and sold Christmas trees during the winter season.
Gilbert belonged to American Legion Post 28. He was also a former member of Ocean View VFW, the Elks and was a past Commodore of the Indian River Yacht Club.
Gil had a big heart and never met a stranger. He loved life and lived it to the fullest.
In addition to his parents, Gilbert was preceded in death by his brothers: Henry, Robert and Thomas. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Margaret DiSaia Bernoski; a daughter, Karen Aszman and her husband, Michael; a son, Gilbert Bernoski, Jr. and his wife, Yolanda; his grandchildren, Matthew Aszman and Jessyca Norwood; his sister, Martha Stoll and her husband, Ron Stoll; and his beloved dog, Benny.
