George "Sonny" Swain's Obituary
George Frank "Sonny" Swain, age 73, of Bridgeville, DE, passed away on Wednesday, March 25, 2015 at his residence. He was born in Cannon, DE on July 28, 1941, son of the late Howard Farring and Lenore Mae (Blades) Swain.
Mr. Swain was a 1959 graduate of Bridgeville High School who would later serve his country with the US Air Force from 1960-1964. After his honorable discharge from the Air Force, Mr. Swain embarked on a 34 year career with the DuPont Company.
As a young man, Mr. Swain drove stock cars locally and continued his love of car racing as a NASCAR fan. He was an avid bowler, serving 10 years as the President of the Lower Delaware Bowlers Association. Some of his proudest moments were receiving his ring for bowling a 298 game and one for his 300 game, also being inducted into the Lower Delaware Bowlers Hall of Fame. Mr. Swain and his teammate Grant White won the Delaware State Tournament Doubles. He also won the Men's Singles in a DuPont Employee Tournament. He was a proud member of the Bridgeville Volunteer Fire Department for 23 years. In addition to his bowling and NASCAR interests, Mr. Swain enjoyed an occasional round of golf with friends or casting a fishing rod on local waters.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Swain was preceded in death by his sister Bonnie C. Swain, brother in-law Richard H. Josephson, father in-law Henry W. Josephson and mother in-law Ruth P. Josephson. He is survived by his loving wife of 51 years, Astrid L. Swain of Bridgeville, DE; 2 sons, Brock Swain and his wife Katrina of Georgetown, DE; Sean Swain and his wife Pamela of Cannon, DE; a grandson, Zachary Swain of Georgetown, DE; 4 granddaughters, Sarah Swain of Greenwood, DE; Victoria Swain, Abigail Swain and Grace Swain all of Cannon, DE; a brother, Howard F. Swain and his wife Daisey of Rhodesdale, MD, a sister, Linda M. Slaughter and her husband Howard of Seaford, DE; a sister in-law, Ann Marie Josephson of Gloucester, MA and many nieces and nephews.
A Memorial Service will be held at 1:00 PM Monday, March 30, 2015 at Parsell Funeral Homes & Crematorium, Hardesty Chapel, 202 Laws Street, Bridgeville, DE 19933 where friends may visit beginning at 12 PM. Interment will be at 2 PM at the Bridgeville Cemetery.
