George B Horneck's Obituary
George B. Horneck, age 94, of Milton, DE passed away on Tuesday, July 19, 2016, at Delaware Hospice Center, in Milford, DE. He was born Wednesday, September 21, 1921 in Uniondale, NY, son of the late George and Irene (Carman) Horneck.
Mr. Horneck was a graduate of Baldwin Senior High School in New York, Class of 1939. After high school he worked briefly at the Long Island Typewriter Company, Chase National Bank on Wall Street and Grumman Aircraft Company, helping make F4F Wild Cats and F6F Hell Cats. In November of 1942, he enlisted in the United States Navy where he proudly served his country during World War II.
In 1946 Mr. Horneck moved to Bethlehem, PA where he attended Lehigh University and received his Bachelors in Art Education. He was a member of the Omicron Delta Kappa Leadership Fraternity. He taught summer school at Colombia University in NYC and then moved to Stratford, CT to teach Aviation and General Science to high school students. In August of 1950, Mr. Horneck then moved to Falls Church, VA to work at the Armed Forces Security Agency (AFSA). He continued his career with the NFSA, now the National Security Agency in Fort Meade, MD. In 1973, he retired after working at the Space Program in Cape Kennedy and Vandenberg Air Force Base in CA.
After moving to South Bethany, DE, Mr. Horneck sold real estate and built American Timber Cedar Homes. In June of 1975, he married the love of his life, Nancy VanderStaay. In 1977 they moved to their home in Milton, DE. Mr. Horneck was a member of the Cape Henlopen Elks Lodge for 36 years. He was a loving husband, step father, grandfather, great grandfather and friend who will be missed by all who knew him.
Mr. Horneck is survived by his loving wife of 41 years, Nancy (Boise) Horneck; his step-son, Gary VanderStaay and his wife, Ramona of Seagoville, TX; his step-daughters, Shirley Ewald and her husband, Mark of Shade Gap, PA and Sharon Kneessi and her husband, Donald of Annapolis, MD; 12 grandchildren; and 10 great grandchildren.
A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, July 23, 2016 at 2:00 PM at the Cape Henlopen Elks Lodge #2540, 18544 Beaver Dam Rd, Lewes, DE 19958.
Graveside Services will be held on, Monday, July 25, 2016 at 11:00 AM at Henlopen Memorial Park, 28787 Lockerman Road, Milton, DE 19968.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Mr. Horneck's name to The Cape Henlopen Elks Club Scholarship fund at the address listed above.
