George W. Calhoun's Obituary
On April 2, 2016, the world was diminished by the death of George W. Calhoun, 79, of Rehoboth Beach, DE, formerly of Upper Marlboro, MD. George passed away at Delaware Hospice after a short illness. He is survived by his beloved and loving wife Carole Miller Calhoun; mother Mildred Denney, Ft. Belvoir, VA; and sister Deborah Korge, Coral Gables; FL. He was preceded in death by sister Patricia O'Connor. He will be sadly missed by his father-in-law, sisters-and brothers-in law and his nieces and nephews, cousins, and his friends.
After graduating from Mount Vernon H.S. in 1955, George worked in the offices of the Julius Garfinkel Department Store in Washington, DC. He served in the United States Armed Forces from 1956 - 58, where he developed a life-long interest in radio communication. While attending American University, he worked for the Republican Congressional Committee and then as Office Manager for the Republican National Committee. After managing the 1964 Convention in San Francisco, George left the position to attend Georgetown Law School.
In 1969 George began his distinguished career with the Department of Justice. He rose from Trial Attorney to Chief of Special Litigation; from Senior Counsel for Law Enforcement Coordination where he traveled the country to coordinate the efforts of the U.S. Attorneys General to Special Counsel to Attorney General. He was a charter member of the Senior Executive Service.
Throughout his career, George's weekend escapes were working on his cottages in Rehoboth Beach and cruising his Sea Ray Misty on the Chesapeake Bay and its tributaries. After his retirement, he moved to the beach. Here he has pursued his passions: sketching, ham radio, cooking, doing handyman and IT projects, and spoiling his Balinese cat Spice.
George volunteered at the Gull House in Rehoboth Beach, looked after the properties of friends when they were not here, provided meals for ailing friends, and used his skills to fix what he could. He has demonstrated and shared with his nieces and nephews a "pay it forward" philosophy.
His sense of humor, kindness, and generosity will long be remembered, as will his determination to live his credo "My Way:"
For what is a man, what has he got If not himself, then he has naught; To say the things he truly feels And not the words of one who kneels. The record shows I took the blows And did it my way.
