George James Bateman's Obituary
George James Bateman, Jr., age 87, of Rehoboth Beach, DE, passed away Saturday, July 25, 2009, at his residence with his loved ones by his side. He was born April 18, 1922 in Pittsburgh, PA, son of the late George James Bateman, Sr. and Henrietta (Stinkel) Bateman.
Mr. Bateman was employed by Western Electric for 36 years retiring in the early 1980's as an electrical engineer specializing in high voltage engineering. George was an avid Pittsburgh Steelers fan. He served four years with the U.S. Army during WW II earning the rank of Staff Sergeant. He was a member of American Legion Post 28 as well as the Caterpillar Club. George always enjoyed walking the Henlopen State Park trails but his biggest joy in life was spending time with his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 25 years, F. Barbara (Ainsworth) Bateman (2002). He is survived by his son, Charles Wesley Bradford III and his companion Lois of Harbeson, DE; three daughters, Victoria Ellen Pragg of Rehoboth Beach, Rebeccah Lyn Crouse and her husband Jerry of Millsboro, DE, and Janice Maria Hall and her husband Kevin of Bridgeville, DE; seven grandchildren: Jennifer Leigh Bradford, Charles Wesley Bradford IV, Nicholas S. Tumulty, Joseph Patrick Bradford, William Keith Pragg, Gary Wayne Pragg, and Adam Michael Bradford; two great-grandchildren, Ali James Bradford and Kaelan Rose Bradford; and a niece Patty "Ray" Schmeider of Douglassville, GA.
Funeral services will be held Friday, July 31, 2009, 11:00 A.M. at Parsell Funeral Homes & Crematorium, Atkins-Lodge Chapel, 16961 Kings Highway, Lewes, DE; Chaplain Harry Hiltner will be officiating. Friends may call at the funeral home on Thursday, July 30, 6:00 to 8:00 PM and again on Friday beginning at 10:00 A.M. Interment with military honors will be at Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 26669 Patriots Way, Millsboro, DE.
