Gary had a unique ability to connect with people. They liked him personally. For me he became dear friend, demanding teacher, and trusted counselor. In1999 Barry and I had moved permanently to Lewes when Gary convinced me to become the secretary of a volunteer group committed to saving the collapsing Overfalls Lightship.
A former Coast Guardsman and business executive, Gary Stabley served as the first president of the Overfalls Foundation from the fall of 1999 until the fall of 2003.
None of the original volunteers had professional background in restoring ships, but Gary made us believe that we could somehow save the historic lightship. We began by rolling up our sleeves and cleaning the ship. Many members met every morning on the porch at the Café Azafran. Gary listened to us as we discussed the emergency of the day. Because of rusting metal, water sometimes leaked through holes in the hull of the ship. Using his calm administrative skills, his contacts, and his problem-solving ability he helped us find solutions to the many problems we faced.
Rest in peace, Gary.
