Affectionately known as Gar, Zak, Charles, Uncle Charlie, PopPop and ‘Das’, he was loved and adored by many. He was a great man, a devoted husband and the best father you could ask for. Few compare. His parents were tailors, who owned their own dry-cleaning businesses. As kids, we remember many summers on Glenwood Avenue in Wildwood, NJ at his parents’ hotels. He went on to live in New Castle and then spent 55+ years in Newark, DE. He worked for Laird, Delaware Trust and Sears, retiring from Discover Card, in addition to having his own accounting business. He was never far from the church, serving many roles including Eucharistic Minister. In addition, he was a Lifetime Member of both the 3rd and 4th Degree, Knights of Columbus.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Zakarian was predeceased by his wife, Dolores J. Crader Zakarian, whom he loved dearly; his son Garabed “Gary” D. Zakarian; his granddaughter, little angel Shelby Lynn; and his brother, Zakar “Zak” and his wife Millie Zakarian. He is survived by his son, Daniel V. Zakarian, of Houston, TX; daughter, Karen L. Zakarian, of Rehoboth Beach, DE; son-in-law, Jesse D. Burns; daughter, Margaret “Margie” A. Hayden and her husband David, of Wilmington, DE; 7 grandchildren: Matthew, Phillip, Daniel, Arielle, Jason, Brian and Maggie; 1 great-grandchild, Thomas; sisters-in-law, Patricia Pierce and Joan and her husband Thomas Neville, all of Anderson, SC; cousin, Richard and his wife Roberta Zakarian of Santa Cruz, CA; nephews, David and his wife Karen Zakarian, of San Francisco, CA; Michael and his wife Connie Miller, of Camden, DE; Mark and his wife Susan Miller, of California; William Dudziak, of Wilmington, DE; nieces, Susan and her husband Rob McIntyre of San Diego, CA; Teresa and her husband Steve Melton of Gaston, NC; Misty Hill, of Cork, Ireland; Jennifer Dudziak Kidd and husband Eric Kidd, of North East, MD; Dana Dudziak and husband Brandon Anderson, of Anderson, SC; and Kim Dudziak Shank and husband Joe Shank, of Pike Creek, DE; and, of course, many dear friends, who have become more like family.
