Frederick William Meyer's Obituary
Fred Meyer (aka "PopPop") passed away on Sunday, August 4, 2024, at the age of 81. Born in Santa Barbara, CA on April 11, 1943, Fred naturally loved the sun. He graduated from University California Santa Barbara in 1965 and spent his career working in the Reinsurance Industry, ultimately retiring from SwissRe after over 30 years.
Fred was a voracious reader, with stacks of books always on deck. He loved to travel, especially multiple Disney trips with his wife Alice and grandchildren. He showed his daughters the world from young ages, fueling their love of travel, and he organized many fly-fishing adventures with his brother Jim and their buddies. Alice and Fred enjoyed traveling in his retirement years with close friends exploring the world afloat spectacular cruises. Fred was a devoted father and grandfather making many trips to San Francisco, Brooklyn NY, and Annapolis to share time with his daughters and grandchildren, attending their activities with the same "joy" he exhibited at his daughters' dance recitals when they were young. In his last years at his home in Delaware, Fred spent quality hours basking outside in the sun on his back porch and in a rocker on his front stoop, with his dog Riley and dear friends, regardless how hot or steamy. He is fondly remembered for his quick wit, dry sense of humor and ease of conversation.
Fred is survived by his wife, Alice Meyer, his daughters, Jennifer Clemons and Carolyn Crooks, their spouses Mark Crooks and Ricky Clemons, and his four grandchildren, Hadley, Finley, Cooper and RJ. He is also missed by his best "furry" companion, Riley, who was by his side until the end.
A Celebration of Life will be held privately. In lieu of flowers, given Fred’s love of his dogs (aka his "Girls"), please consider making a donation to one of two dog rescues in Fred’s name: The Asher House (Donate – The Asher House) or ASPCA (Honor Gifts | ASPCA).
