Florence Ann Turner's Obituary
Obituary for Florence A Turner
Florence Ann Turner, age 94, passed away after a short illness on Monday, February 14, 2022, surrounded by her family. At the time of her death, she was a resident of Brandywine Living at Seaside Pointe in Rehoboth Beach.
She was born Florence Ann Reisdorff in Manhattan, New York on December 8, 1927, and grew up in Westchester County and the Bronx. She attended Mount Saint Ursula Academy in the Bronx and went on to earn a certification from Berkeley Secretarial School. During WWII, she was a member of the Women’s Army Volunteer Corps at Mitchel Field. She held many jobs over the years, including assistant at Home Sewing Trade News and in the J.C. Penney Catalog department. While raising her children, she kept busy by volunteering for the Association for the Help of Retarded Children and by reading to students in local elementary schools. In 1989, she retired from her favorite job at the Nassau County Bar Association, where she served as the grievance secretary. She was the bereavement contact for the Our Lady of Peace Parish Social Ministry in her later years.
Florence was married to her beloved husband, Gerald Turner at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Garden City, New York on January 26, 1958. She raised her three children in Lynbrook and was a member of Our Lady of Peace Parish for over 60 years. After her husband passed in 1999, she moved to West Hempstead but stayed a member of the Our Lady of Peace Parish. In April 2020, she moved to Lewes, Delaware to live with her son and daughter-in-law during the Covid pandemic. She became a resident of Brandywine in June 2021, where her friendships expanded.
Florence loved the beach and the ocean, especially BBQs with friends at Point Lookout on Long Island. Her love of the beach continued in Delaware. Her hobbies included drawing, faithfully watching Jeopardy, going to the movies, and reading, especially the Ellery Queen Mystery Magazine. She loved music and singing, and she was happy listening to whatever genre of music was popular, although she was partial to Jazz.
Florence was a very outgoing and friendly person. She could strike up a conversation with anyone and get them to tell her their life stories. She kept in contact with all her friends, even when she was not driving anymore. She was able to master the iPad for e-mails, and she was a prolific texter on her smart phone. At Brandywine, she was a member of the choir, and she started a New Resident Welcoming group there.
Florence was preceded in death by her husband, Gerald and her three siblings, Edmund, Rita, and Eileen. She is survived by her three children: Anthony (Diane) of Lewes, DE, Christopher of West Hempstead, NY, and Tracy (Dan Orza) of Lido Beach, NY; her three grandchildren: David of Brooklyn, NY, Andrew of North Bethesda, MD, and Emily McAleer (Dan) of Manhattan, NY; and a nephew and several nieces.
Funeral services for Florence will take place in Lynbrook, NY. Interment will follow the services at Holy Rood Cemetery in Westbury, NY beside her husband.
