Evelyn Alice Johnson's Obituary
Evelyn Alice (Whitman) Johnson, age 86 of Rehoboth Beach, DE, passed away peacefully at home under Hospice care on Monday, January 17, 2011. She was born in Lincoln, Rhode Island, on Sunday, March 9, 1924, daughter of the late Ralph G. and Glendelia Isabel (Gangong) Whitman. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Robert M. Johnson, who died on March 13, 2003 and one brother, Ernest Whitman.
Evelyn moved with her family to Metuchen, NJ when she was six years old and graduated from Metuchen High School. She met Robert M. Johnson while both were working for the DuPont Company in Perth Amboy, NJ; they married on March 9, 1942.
Robert remained with the DuPont Company for almost 40 years and the couple moved to Delaware in 1970 settling into Sandy Brae 16 years ago. Four years after Robert's death Evelyn moved to Brandywine Assisted Living in Rehoboth Beach which she considered "home" until her death.
Evelyn was employed in executive secretarial positions after her children were grown. A member of Bethel United Methodist Church, Lewes, she enjoyed reading, knitting, crocheting and tending to her indoor plants.
She is survived by one daughter: Susan C. Brittingham and husband A. Kim "KB" of Harbeson; three sons: Kenneth R. Johnson and wife Jackie of Cranbury, NJ, Donald A. Johnson and wife Audrey of Vista, CA, and Robert A. Johnson and wife Lynn of Virginia Beach, VA; one sister, Beatirce Bilderback of Haines City, F; one brother, Gerald Whitman and wife Fran of Las Vegas, NV; 12 grandchildren; and 15 great grandchildren.
Memorial Services will be held on Thursday, January 20, 2011 at 11:00 AM at Parsell Funeral Homes & Crematorium, Atkins-Lodge Chapel, 16961 Kings Highway, Lewes, where friends may call at 10:00 am. Interment will follow at 1:00 PM at the Delaware Veteran Memorial Cemetery, 26669 Patriots Way, Millsboro, DE 19966. A reception will follow the cemetery services at Susan and A. Kim Brittingham's residence in Harbeson.
