Evelyn L. Childress' Obituary
Evelyn L. Childress, age 93, of Lewes, DE passed away on Tuesday, November 8, 2016, at home among loving family. She was born February 6, 1923 in Ontario, OR, the daughter of the late John Zittercob and Lillian Dail.
Evelyn held an Oregon college degree. Late in World War II, she taught mathematics to servicemen in their quest to find jobs as they returned home from the war. Her first husband, Harry Thurman, was an engineer who, in his spare time, developed as yet unavailable prosthetics for some of those wounded servicemen. Several years after his death, she married Bill Childress, owner of The Saxon Swan on Second Street who lived in Lewes.
A beacon of hard working farming stock, she kept both husbands on the straight and narrow path of community citizenship and good natured fun. An important part of that fun was her inherited children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren, the younger the better.
Evelyn is survived by her stepson Hampton Childress, and his wife Paula, of Towson, Maryland, stepson Marcus Childress and his wife Ellen of Plains, Montana. Both provided grandchildren for Evelyn, and Hampton's son's family brought great grandchildren of both sexes to her life and true joy. Paula's son, Stefan and wife Janja gave her great grandsons also, who especially enjoyed her home on the coast and her unparalleled chocolate chip cookies. Evelyn's closest remaining Oregon Zittercob family includes nephews Tom and Robin Zittercob, John and Cheryl Zittercob, Ann Kouns, Jan Troutner, and all their children.
