Emily A. Rowland's Obituary
Emily A. Rowland, age 95, of Lewes, DE, passed away Saturday, March 31, 2007, at Beebe Medical Center in Lewes. She was born October 9, 1911 in Dagsboro, DE, daughter of the late Benjamin Truitt Adkins and Amelia (Collins) Adkins.
Mrs. Rowland was a life long resident of Sussex County; the youngest in a family of eight children. She was also the oldest living member of Lewes Presbyterian Church. She was a member of the Sussex County Heart Association often serving on the Heart Association Ball Committee. Mrs. Rowland was a charter member of the Rehoboth Beach County Club and played with the Ladies Golf Team. She was active in the Sussex County Republican Club and enjoyed playing bridge, cooking, and entertaining. She loved tailgating at UD football games and wintering in Barbados and Vero Beach, FL. During WW II she volunteered with the Red Cross and when the CCC Camp was in Lewes, she worked with the Gray Ladies. She was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and great-great-grandmother.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Captain James Wright Rowland (2001) and her seven siblings. She is survived by two daughters, Jay and her husband John D. Hukill of Pinewater Farm and Margaret Webb of Lewes; five grandchildren, Charlotte H. Passwaters and her husband Colter; Sarah H. Berninger and her husband Michael; James Rowland Hukill and his wife Sabrina; Amy W. West and her husband Joe; and Abby R. Webb and her finance Andrew Hooven; eight great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; numerous nieces and nephews and their families; and one sister-in-law, Thelma J. Rowland and her family.
A Funeral Service will be held Tuesday, April 3, 11 AM, at Parsell Funeral Homes & Crematorium, Atkins-Lodge Chapel, 16961 Kings Highway, Lewes, DE; Rev. Harry Hughes will be officiating. Friends may call at the funeral home one hour prior to the service. A Graveside Service will follow at All Saints Cemetery, Beaver Dam Road, near Angola, DE.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to Lewes Presbyterian Church, P.O. Box 612, Lewes, DE 19958.
