Edith Wanda Canakis' Obituary
Wanda Canakis, age 81 of Lewes, DE passed away on Monday, August 14, 2023. She was born on December 14, 1941, in Philadelphia, PA, daughter of the late Enoch and Edith (Gable) Williams.
Wanda was swept away by the love of her life George Canakis and together they started their 63 years journey on a Valentine's elopement. They embarked in many creative projects together, from remodeling a historic mansion to owning an art and antique business. Wanda cultivated her husband's artistic abilities, buying his first art tools.
She pursued many creative endeavors from entrepreneurship to her passionate career in the food industry, always looking to enrich her life by learning.
Faith was a pillar in her life, and she brought up her children in the love of the Lord. Wanda nurtured their abilities, lovingly supporting both their slip ups and successes. She propelled her children to higher education but taught them to be gracious, genuine, always growing and goal oriented.
Wanda gave her time and talents to the community by volunteering. There was never a road trip she would turn down or an invite she would overlook. Wanda could create art from scraps, a feast from tidbits, but especially loved her husband's work. She excelled at making cards and jewelry, beaded flower pieces, and making pottery. A passionate gardener spent flower heads became next year's garden. Her flower beds were always show pieces. Wanda lived a life fulfilled, never wasting a moment. She would sing Amazing Grace to any friend or stranger. Her curiosity was boundless - one was never long for a stranger. That was her essence, cultivating growth, loyalty, kindness and curiosity.
Wanda taught her children about forgiveness, patience, and serving others. Her wisdom words "Remember Who you serve" will never be forgotten, but only passed on to her grandchildren. Her greatest love was her family. Time with these loved ones was what she cherished most. Wanda was most gently and lovingly cared for by the man she loved, and she was cherished by her children and grandchildren. She will be genuinely missed.
In addition to her parents, Wanda was predeceased by her sister, Janet Harriet Baker. She is survived by her beloved husband George Canakis of Lewes, DE; her children: Phoebe Canakis (Daniel Shultz) of Milton, DE, and Philemon Canakis (Janell) of Lebanon, PA; her grandchildren: Alexander, Grant, and Calla Canakis of Lebanon, PA; her brothers: Enoch "Junior" Williams ( Vivien), and Donald Williams; her half-brother, Tom Civitello; and many nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions in Wanda's memory to First Baptist Church of Lewes, 1001 Kings Hwy, Lewes, DE 19958.
