Dorothy Holland Thumser's Obituary
Dorothy Holland Thumser, age 94, of Bridgeville, DE, passed away on Thursday, August 17, 2017 at Nanticoke Memorial Hospital. She was born in Denton, MD, on Sunday, October 8, 1922, daughter of the late Frank and Emma Howard.
For six years, Mrs. Holland attended Mt. Harmony Elementary School. In seventh grade she began schooling at Caroline High School in Denton, MD, from which she graduated in 1939. After graduation she came to Bridgeville and worked in a restaurant for Tillie and George Lord.
Mrs. Holland met the love of her life, Leroy Holland, and they married in 1940. She started working at A.I. duPont before World War II began and Leroy was drafted in 1943. In 1946, Leroy was discharged, and she resigned from her job so they could begin their family together. They had two daughters: Dorothy Lee and Sally Ann. When Sally started school, Dorothy asked Leroy if he would mind if she went back to work. He was agreeable as long as she was home when the children went to school and home when they returned. She worked as a cafeteria employee and later, a manager, for Woodbridge School District for 29 years. This allowed her to work and be at home with her children, as well. She continued her work there until retiring in 1985.
Leroy passed away October, 3, 1983. Later on, she met a gentleman named Louis Thumser, and they married in 1997. They lived in Florida for ten years until he passed away in 2007. She then returned to her home in Bridgeville, DE.
Mrs. Holland became a member of Union United Methodist Church in Bridgeville, DE in 1946 where she served as a Sunday School teacher, was on the Administrative Board, a Trustee, and a member of the United Methodist Women for many years. In her spare time she enjoyed reading, word puzzles, traveling and collecting antiques.
In addition to her parents, Mrs. Holland was preceded in death by her first husband of 43 years, Leroy Holland, her second husband of 10 years, Louis F. Thumser and her grandson Daniel Daisey. She is survived by her daughters, Dorothy L. Marine of Salisbury, MD and Sally A. Daisey (Harry) of Seaford, DE; her 4 grandchildren: Robert (Theresa) Richey, Adam Richey, Dennis Daisey (Matthew), and Leah Bounds; 4 great grandchildren: and 3 great-great grandchildren; and her sister, Louise Williamson of Seaford, DE.
