Dorothy Virginia Shockley Truitt's Obituary
Dorothy Virginia Shockley Truitt, 91, of Rehoboth Beach, went home to be with the Lord on June 8, 2010. “Dot” was born in Greensboro, Maryland and has been a resident of Rehoboth Beach since 1936. She was predeceased by her husband, James S. Truitt, a general contractor and land developer who died in 1981. Dot worked with her husband in his many business ventures, including developments such as Tru-Vale Acres, Fieldwood and Sandy Brae.
Dot is survived by three children: James S., Jr. and his wife, Gayle, of Rehoboth Beach; Wm. Roger and his wife, Patricia, of Severna Park MD and Suzanne “Sue” Truitt of Rehoboth Beach. She also is survived by six grandchildren: James S. Truitt, III and wife, Susanne, of Rehoboth Beach; Paul Truitt and wife, Doris, of Garnet Valley PA; Janeen Lovenguth and husband, Chris, of Ellendale DE; Kathy Schlitter and husband, Mike, of Harbeson DE; Laura Dougherty and husband, Charlie, of Bel Air MD; Kimberly Truitt and fiancé, Justin Turco, of Bel Air MD; 13 great-grandchildren: Adam Lovenguth of Ellendale DE; Matthew and Michael Schlitter of Harbeson DE; Jacob and Zachary Truitt of Garnet Valley PA; James S. Truitt, IV of Rehoboth Beach; Amy Calhoun and husband, Denny, of Greenwood DE; Ashley Webb and husband, John, of Millsboro DE; Abby Lovenguth of Ellendale DE; Cristiana Wilcoxon of Newport Beach CA; Natalie, Alexa and Hailey Dougherty of Bel Air MD and one great great granddaughter, Brooklyn Jade Calhoun of Greenwood DE.
Dot was a member of Epworth United Methodist Church for more than 50 years. She was a member of the Church cemetery board and several circles at Epworth. She was known for baking many cakes and pies and taking them to shut-ins in the Rehoboth area.
Dot was the youngest of 12 children born to William Thomas Shockley and Florence Cohee Shockley. None of her siblings survive her. She and her husband, “Jim”, lived in a Rehoboth camp meeting house at the corner of Second Street and Baltimore Avenue in 1937 that later was moved to Christian Street and restored as the Annie Hazzard Museum.
A funeral service will be held at Epworth United Methodist Church on 19285 Holland Glade Road, Rehoboth Beach on June 11, 2010, at 11 A.M., with a viewing one hour prior to the service. Interment will follow in Epworth Methodist Cemetery on Henlopen Avenue in Rehoboth Beach. The Rev. Dr. Jonathan Baker will officiate. Arrangements are by Parsell Funeral Homes & Crematorium, Lewes.
