Dorothy J. Matthies age 88 of Lewes, DE passed away on Friday, April 21, 2017, surrounded by her loved ones, at the Delaware Hospice Center, in Milford, DE. She was born February 15, 1929 in Wilmington, DE, daughter of the late C. Edward Johnson and Maryland Porter Johnson.
Mrs. Matthies retired as a Bank Clerk from the former Wilmington Trust Company after a career of over 40 years.
Mrs. Matthies loved to travel, enjoyed the theatre and opera and especially music. For many years as a member of the North Baptist Church in Wilmington, DE, she sang in the church choir, providing solos on many occasions. After moving to Lewes she joined the Lewes Presbyterian Church where often performed duets with her sister. She was a devoted volunteer at the Lewes Cheer Center where she enjoyed playing bingo, visiting with friends and had received awards in recognition of her service there.
In addition to her parents Mrs. Matthies was preceded in death by her husband Fred J. Matthies who passed in 1994 and by three brothers, Edward Clarence Johnson, Otho Marvel Johnson, and Charles Albert Johnson.
She is survived by her sister Frances J. Stevenson of Lewes, DE, and by many nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews, and great great nieces and nephews.
Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, April 29, 2017, at 11:00 AM at Lewes Presbyterian Church, 133 Kings Highway, Lewes, DE. where friends may visit beginning at 10:00 AM.
Graveside services will be held on Wednesday April 26, 2017 at 11:00 AM at the Gracelawn Memorial Park, 2220 N. Dupont Pkwy, New Castle, DE.
