Dorothy Helen Clower's Obituary
Dorothy Helen Clower, age 92, of Lewes, DE passed away peacefully after a short battle with cancer surrounded by her loving family on Monday, April 20, 2015 at the Delaware Hospice Center in Milford, DE. She was born on April 16, 1923 in Granite City, IL, daughter of the late Lee B. and Edith Mae (Duncan) Porterfield.
Dorothy was a 1940 graduate of Eddystone High School in Eddystone, PA. After high school, she continued her education at Strayer Business College in Philadelphia, PA, receiving an Associate’s degree in 1942. She married Dennis Samuel Clower in 1944 at Eddystone Methodist Church in Eddystone, PA. For 10 years, Dorothy worked as a Secretary at the Delaware County Courthouse and Government Center in Media, PA. Later she and her husband, Dennis, owned and operated the Anderson House Restaurant in Glenolden, PA for 15 years.
Most important to Dorothy's heart was her family whom she loved dearly. She enjoyed shopping for her great-granddaughters and preparing delicious meals for her family. She was a great cook, but baking something "sweet" was her specialty. She also loved gardening and taking care of her colorful flowers.
For many years, Dorothy enjoyed volunteering at Beebe Hospital. She was also a longtime member of Ridley Park Presbyterian Church in Ridley Park, PA.
In addition to her parents, Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband of 42 years, Dennis S. Clower, in 1986, her significant partner of 20 years, John A. Segrin, Jr., in 2005 and two brothers, Gordon R. Porterfield and Leo E. Porterfield. She is survived by her daughter, Cheryl Clower Segrin and her husband John A. Segrin, III of Cape May, NJ; two granddaughters: Jacqueline Rue MacDonald and her husband Peter of Lancaster, MA and Lauren B. Rue and her husband James Aquaro of Lunenburg, MA; three great-granddaughters: Heather MacDonald, Katie MacDonald and Alexandra MacDonald all of Lancaster, MA; a sister, Peggy Porterfield Lare and her husband William of Dade City, FL; and many beloved nieces, nephews and dear friends.
Memorial Services will be held on Saturday, May 2, 2015, at 2:00 PM, at Parsell Funeral Homes & Crematorium, Atkins-Lodge Chapel, 16961 Kings Highway, Lewes, DE, where friends may visit beginning at 1:00 PM. Interment will be private.
Memorial contributions may be made in Dorothy's memory to Delaware Hospice Center, 100 Patriots Way, Milford, DE 19963.
