Dorothy Virginia Brittingham's Obituary
Dorothy Virginia Holloway Brittingham passed away December 11, 2005 in Atlanta, Georgia. She was born February 13, 1914 and was a loving mother and wife. Dorothy was known for being stubborn & strong-willed, and for being a "taking care of business" kind of lady. When her mother, Sadie Fisher died of Influenza in 1918 she assisted with the care of her brothers and sisters. Her care for others continued when she decided to become a nurse and later graduated from the Beebe Hospital School of Nursing on May 15, 1935.
Two years later she married Alton Lee Brittingham in Berlin, Maryland on April 24th 1937. She continued her career as a nurse for 10 years until the birth of her first child Patricia Mary Brittingham born December 25, 1947. Soon came Alton Lee Brittingham Jr, born August 18th 1949. Both of her children had juvenile diabetes and again her caring nature shone through. Despite her children's health she inspired them both to get an education and both graduated from the University of Delaware. When Dorothy's husband died she continued to take care of Alton Lee Brittingham Jr. by herself as his health continued to worsen over the years until his death in May of 1978.
Mrs. Brittingham had many obstacles to overcome in her life but she always kept a good attitude along with her strong faith in God. In 2001 she decided to move to Georgia and to be near her daughter and granddaughter. She lived in an assisted living home to remain as independent as she could.
Dorothy is survived by her daughter and son-in-law Patricia Mary and Terry Byers of Dunwoody, GA; a granddaughter Heather Bordeaux and her husband Rob; 6 sisters: Julia Widic, Mary Fernandez, Ruth Bailey, Madlyn Massey, Violet Lynch, and Christine Brasure; and a brother-in-law Franklin Brittingham.
She will be greatly missed, but her enduring strength, never-ending love and her compassion will continue to motivate and inspire the family.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday December 15, 2005 at 2:00 p.m. at Parsell Funeral Homes & Crematorium, Atkins-Lodge Chapel, 16961 Kings Highway, Lewes, DE with Rev. Jack Cohen officiating. Friends may call at the funeral home one hour prior to the services. Burial will follow in Bethel Methodist Cemetery, Lewes.
