Doris C. Mills' Obituary
Doris Cunningham Mills passed away on January 17, 2011 at The Milford Center in Milford, Delaware. She was 87 years old.
The daughter of Dr. Jacob Metz Cunningham and Emilie Krauter Cunningham, Doris was born in Philadelphia, PA. Studious and intelligent, Doris was valedictorian of her high school class and earned a B.A. from Wilson College. She then moved to Seaford, Delaware to begin her teaching career. The consummate grammarian, she taught English and Latin. Later, she would receive her Master’s Degree in elementary education and teach at Greenwood Elementary School.
In Delaware, she met and married Alvin Mills in 1951. Together, they would operate the Southern States Cooperative in Greenwood for many years.
A lifelong learner, Doris studied to become a master gardener and master food educator. She was instrumental in establishing the Greenwood Public Library and remained active in the Friends of the Library. An accomplished needleworker, she was seldom without a project at her side. She knit countless hats, sweaters and blankets that she donated to hospital pediatric wards and children in poor countries. For years, she lent her skills to the sewing circle at Greenwood Mennonite Church where she attended.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her brother Robert Cunningham, and her husband of 40 years, Alvin Mills.
She is survived by her sister-in-law, Mary Esther Mills, brother-in-law Edward Turnberger, seven nieces, three nephews and her devoted friends and caregivers, Darlene and Eblen Chisenhall.
