Donald R. Zuchelli's Obituary
Donald Raymond Zuchelli, 72, of Milton, DE, previously a resident of the Annapolis, MD area for 34 years, died April 20, 2009 at the Delaware Hospice Center, Milford, DE. He was born August 15, 1936 in Alexandria, VA, son of the late A. Joseph Zuchelli and Anne Myers Zuchelli.
A devoted husband to Elaine Slade Zuchelli for 45 years and father to Donna J. Abramczyk, Robert L. Zuchelli, Victoria Z. Sulerzyski and Michelle Z. McDonald, and a loving grandfather to Hope, Brooke, Abigail, Bryce and Ethan.
Following his graduation from Florida State University, he enjoyed a successful and distinguished career as an urban economist and land use planner. He was founding CEO and President of ZHA, Inc. Among his many professional accomplishments, he was instrumental in leading his company in securing and completing major planning projects throughout the United States, including local economic developments for the State of Maryland, Montgomery County, and Prince George's County, including the revitalization of Silver Spring. More notably, he was the Project Manager for the development of the John Hopkins University Biomedical Research Park, the Gallery Place in Washington DC, various revitalization projects in downtown Baltimore and the Inner Harbor, and The Mall of America in Bloomington, MN. His most recent planning projects included the direction and supervision of the Silverplace Joint Venture Team for the development of the Silverplace M-NCPPC Headquarters & Mixed Use Project and the Downtown Renaissance to be located in Quincy, MA. He also served as Senior Analyst for Grand Heritage Hotels International and he was a member of the Urban Land Institute. Mr. Zuchelli also served in various military services for over 44 years, retiring in 1981 as a Commander in the United States Coast Guard Reserves.
