To Suzie and the Ziegler family
I first met Don in 1972 when I graduated from college and started at Price Waterhouse. In late July 1972, Don came in to the staff accountant‘s room (the bullpen – no partner ever did that so we were terrified). He asked the two best golfers in the room if they would like to play golf sometime. How he knew I was one of the two I don’t know but that was Don, he always had the facts. Over the next 11 years we played golf together, many times at Whitemarsh and at times for more money than I could afford at that time. While we had developed a personal relationship, I never worked for Don during that time. In late 1983, Shaun O’Malley asked me to come to his office. He was the office managing partner at the time. I had no idea why he wanted to see me. I entered his office and he pushed a button and the door closed behind me. Now, I really had no idea what was about to happen. I approached his desk and saw Don sitting in the right chair. I sat down in the left chair trying not to show how nervous I was. These two men were among the highest ranking partners in our firm at that time. Shaun explained that a very long-standing client of the office was very dissatisfied with our service and that he had decided to replace the partner/manager team. He had chosen Don to be the new partner and Don had chosen me to be the manager. The decision Don made changed my life and the life of my family forever. Over the next two years, we worked very closely together in a difficult situation. He was tough, but he taught me so much about hard work, relationships and striving for excellence. We were successful in turning the client relationship to a positive and two years later I was admitted to the partnership with Don being my number one supporter. I could never repay him for this but was forever thankful but he had the faith in me to choose me to work with him.
Zig, I am better for your being in my life…
To the family, may the many memories that you have of your husband, your father, your grandfather and your great grandfather give you solace in these difficult times.
God bless.
