Donald Ryan Lewis' Obituary
Donald Ryan Lewis, M.D., of Rehoboth Beach, DE, and formerly of Rockville, MD, died at home on January 24, 2025.
He was born in Philadelphia, PA, on October 14, 1934, to the late Herbert Ryan Lewis and Catherine Law Lewis. The family moved to Betterton, MD, in 1947. He graduated from Chestertown High School and subsequently completed a seven-year combined pre-medical and medical education at the University of Maryland, receiving his M.D. degree in 1959. After an internship at St. Agnes Hospital in Baltimore, MD, he served two years in the U.S. Air Force Medical Corps.
Dr. Lewis began practicing medicine in Olney, MD, in 1962 and was eventually grandfathered in the specialty of family medicine. His practice spanned the era that saw the construction of the new Montgomery General Hospital (now MedStar Montgomery Medical Center), which replaced the original 28-bed facility. He served two terms as Chief of Medical Staff at MGH.
Dr. Lewis was preceded in death by his brother, Herbert N. Lewis; a granddaughter, Camryn Lain; and son-in-law, Robert Lain. He is survived by his loving wife of 48 years, Margaret Chain Lewis, and children: Donald (Nancy), Christopher (Carol), Susan Lain, Lisa (Scott) Caudle, and stepdaughter, Susan Kitchen. Also surviving are eleven grandchildren, numerous great-grandchildren, and eight nieces and nephews.
A life celebration family gathering will take place in Betterton, MD, at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials in Donald's name be directed to:
