David F. McManus' Obituary
David F. McManus, Sr., 79, passed away Tuesday, February 7, 2006 at Beebe Medical Center, Lewes. He was born May 19, 1926, the third child of the late Dr. James P. and Margaret McManus of Bridgeport, CT.
He was raised and schooled in Bridgeport but graduated from Central High School in Ft. Lauderdale, FL in 1944. His primary employment was in the food industry. He was employed by Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Company for 30 years. For twenty of those years, he was the Store Manager for the A&P on 2nd Street in Lewes. After retiring from A&P he was with a food brokerage firm, Randall and Associates for three years. With the encouragement of his wife Evelyn McManus, he purchased a Pepperidge Farm franchise which he had for 18 years before retiring for the second time.
Dave was a man of service. During the Korean War he volunteered for the Ground Observer Corps (GOC) and he was also a member of the Civilian Air Patrol (CAP). While living in Salisbury, he was Chairman of the Youth Athletic Committee, an Elks member, and also on the Salisbury Little League Board of Directors. After moving his family to Lewes in 1955, he continued to be active in civic affairs. He was co-founder of the Lewes Little League with Percy Burton in the late 1950's. He was an Assistant Scout Master and Merit Badge Counselor, and founded an Explorer Post serving a total of 13 years with the Boy Scouts. During his years with the Scouts, he was selected to take a troop to the National Jamboree at Valley Forge, PA in 1964 He was also a founding member of the Star of the Sea Knights of Columbus, Rehoboth Beach, and a member of Cape Henlopen Elks Lodge 2540. Dave volunteered in the Beebe Medical Center print shop in the mid 1990's for a couple of years. He was active in St. Edmond's of Rehoboth Beach for many years where he and his family attended Mass regularly.
Dave was predeceased by his beloved wife, Evelyn (Hall) McMaAnus; his son Christopher; two brothers, James and Thomas; a sister Patricia; and a niece Jane. He is survived by three sons, David F. Jr. of Seaford, Timothy S. and his wife Jody of Roxanna, and Kevin B. and his wife Sally of Dagsboro; a daughter Margaret McVey of Lewes; six grandchildren: Zachary McManus, Meghan McVey, Bobby McVey III, Caitlin McVey, Timothy McManus and Haley McManus.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday, February 11, 2 PM at St. Edmond's Catholic Church, King Charles & Laurel Streets, Rehoboth Beach where friends may call one hour prior to Mass. Arrangements are being handled by Parsell Funeral Homes & Crematorium, Lewes, DE.
In lieu of flowers the family suggests contributions be made to the Beebe Medical Center, Cardiac Care Unit, 424 Savannah Road, Lewes, DE 19958 or to the Gull House (local Alzheimer's chapter), 38149 Terrace Road, Rehoboth Beach, DE 19971.
