(David) Lyle Hohnstine's Obituary
(David) Lyle Hohnstine, 57, Colonel US Army (Retired), beloved member of Bear Trap Dunes Golf Community in Ocean View, Delaware, passed away on January 20, 2009 following a long battle with cancer.
Lyle was born June 11, 1951 in Orange, New Jersey. He graduated from Millburn High School in Millburn, NJ in 1969 and the United States Military Academy, West Point, NY, in 1974, the Armed Forces Staff College in Norfolk, VA in 1986 and the US Army War College, Carlisle, PA in 1995. Lyle served 25 years on active duty in the US Army where he led Soldiers at all levels of Command and in assignments that included Operation Just Cause (Panama), Europe and the Sinai. He retired from the Office of the Deputy Chief of Staff for Logistics in the Pentagon in 1999 to join MBH Settlement Group in McLean Virginia. Lyle loved the game of golf. He was a member of Bear Trap Dunes Golf Course and a founding member of Bayside Golf Course in Fenwick Island DE and served on the Board at Bear Trap. Lyle is remembered for his generosity, compassion, love of country and selfless devotion to family, friends, and community. He had an indomitable desire to help other people and seized upon every opportunity to take charge and make positive things happen.
Lyle is survived by Elspeth, his loving wife of 35 years; his daughters and sons in-law Jamie and Christa Abbott of Tallahassee, FL, and Andrew and Ashley Combs of Baltimore, MD; granddaughters Elspeth Ann Abbott and Mackenzie Taylor Combs; three brothers, Jack, Jas and Don and one sister, Caje. Lyle joins his son Lyle, Jr.
