Daniel Lloyd Gothie, "Grampers" to Talley, Harris & Lainey
Daniel Lloyd Gothie, age 79, of Millsboro, DE passed away on Wednesday, May 25, 2016, at Cadia Rehabilitation Renaissance Healthcare, in Millsboro, DE. He was born Saturday, October 3, 1936 in Lewisburg, PA, to Lt. Daniel Shinton Gothie and Mary (Beck) Gothie.
A graduate of Phillips Exeter Academy, Dan received his BA from Princeton University. He received his MBA from the University of Virginia and an MS in Information Sciences from Columbia University. He served in the Navy and retired from the Naval Reserves as a Lieutenant Commander.
Dan began his career teaching at The Darden School at UVA. He spent a number of years in administration of non- profit organizations. Later he relocated to New Hope, PA and worked in real estate. Upon retiring, he and his wife moved to Delaware where he served as an AmeriCorps volunteer at Fort Miles and Seashore State Park. While there, at age 72 he joined a number of AmeriCorps volunteers from Delaware to assist with rebuilding New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina.
Dan enjoyed a lifetime of traveling with a fondness for the New England coast. He loved all genres of music and was particularly fond of musicals. An avid reader, Dan was seldom seen without a book within reach. He enjoyed collecting lead soldiers from childhood. Known to family and friends alike as a “jack of all trades”, Dan could fix anything. He especially treasured spending time with his family. Reunions with his college roommates were a regular affair for almost 60 years. His wonderful sense of humor will long be remembered by all.
In addition to his parents, Dan was preceded in death by his stepfather, Dr. Kenneth Leiby and his stepsister, Joan Leiby Walter. He is survived by his devoted wife, Sandra Filer-Gothie, his daughters, Francesca Gothie Diggs and her spouse, Steve Diggs of Rumney, New Hampshire, Katya Danielle Gothie and her spouse, Lynne Canning of Santa Fe, New Mexico and his grandchildren Francesca Talley Diggs, Katya Elaine Diggs and Edward Harris Diggs. He is also survived by his brother, Michael Gothie and two stepsisters, Brenda Leiby Yarling and Chris Leiby DeCoursey.
A Celebration of Dan’s Life will be held at a later date in New Hope, PA.
