Craig Shelby Rice's Obituary
Craig Shelby Rice, age 84, of Bridgeville, DE, passed away on Saturday, April 19, 2014, at his home. He was born in Washington, DC, on July 10, 1929, the son of the late Heber Holbrook and Ruth Straughan Rice.
Mr. Rice graduated from Chevy Chase High School in Bethesda, MD in 1947. After graduation, he attended the University of Maryland in College Park, where he was a member of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity. While attending undergraduate school, Mr. Rice also served in the Judge Advocate General's Corps of the United States Air Force. After being honorably discharged, Mr. Rice continued his education at American University in Washington, DC, graduating with a Juris Doctor degree.
He would begin his law career at the Rockville, MD law offices of Heeney, McAuliffe & McAuliffe, and continued serving his clients in the law firm of McInerney, Lane, McCormick, Sullivan & Rice. Mr. Rice then proudly opened his own private office of Craig S. Rice, Attorney at Law. Mr. Rice had an opportunity of a lifetime when he was appointed by the late Judge John Mitchell as a Special Master of the Circuit Court for Montgomery County. After many years of dedicated employment, Mr. Rice retired in 1999 at the age of 70.
He was an active member of the Maryland Bar Association and an avid golfer. He held memberships at Brooke Manor Country Club in Olney, MD and later at Montgomery Village Golf Club in Gaithersburg, MD. After a great round of golf, he would enjoy a drink and a good cigar with his many friends. At the annual Husband and Wife Golf Tournaments, participants considered him the "official lawyer" for the tournament! He will be remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and a dear friend by all who knew him.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Rice was preceded in death by his son, Craig S. Rice. Jr., a brother, Heber H. Rice, Jr., his first wife, Rebecca (Betsy) Hartshorn Rice and his second wife, Nancy Whitney Rice. He is survived by his two daughters: Susan Rice Stewart and her husband Charles C. of Bridgeville, DE and Margaret Rice Schlehuber and her husband Roland E. of Chesapeake Beach, MD; two grandsons: Robert Adam Rice and his wife Devika of Smyrna, GA and William Samuel Jones III and his wife Natasha of Sharptown, MD; three granddaughters: Taylor J. Williams and her husband Jeffery of Sharptown, MD, Theodora W. Jones of Hebron, MD and Rebecca Pearson Schlehuber of Chesapeake Beach, MD; a great-granddaughter, Lillian Ericson of Sharptown, MD; a daughter-in-law, Susan Miller Rice of Wheaton, MD; and his loving canine companions, Betty and Gladys.
A Celebration of Mr. Rice's Life will be held on Saturday, May 3, 2014 from 12:00 PM to 3:00 PM at the Tidewater Inn, Crystal Ballroom, 101 E. Dover Street, Easton, MD 21601. Interment will be private.
