Constance "Conny" Weaver's Obituary
Longtime Library Volunteer
Constance “Conny” Weaver, 83, of Lewes, DE formerly of Chevy Chase, MD, passed away on November 14, 2015 at Beebe Healthcare, with her sons and daughter at her side. She was born in Easton, PA, daughter of the late Francis and Mary Walter.
Conny was a graduate of Moravian Academy and attended Sarah Lawrence College. She moved to Washington, D.C. where she met and married William Mack and raised her children. She was actively involved as a Sunday school teacher at St. Alban’s Episcopal Church. She was also active in her children’s schools, serving on various committees for their respective PTAs and as a volunteer at Sibley Hospital. Her lifelong passion for politics and voter registration included her tenure as Precinct Co-Chair in Chevy Chase, MD for 15 years, and as Vice President, Western Suburban Democratic Clubs.
She enjoyed traveling to both foreign countries and domestically. It was on a vacation that she found Lewes, DE, a town not yet found on the map. In the future she purchased a home that she later called full time upon her retirement in 1986.
Conny became active in her community serving as a Docent with the Lewes Historical Society, specifically at the Doctor’s office on the grounds of the Historical Society every week. She loved the town, its residents and believed strongly in shopping locally. Conny also enjoyed her membership in the Lewes Yacht Club where she took her children and grandchildren as often as she could. The growth of the town was the topic of many conversations and she enjoyed answering questions about Lewes, and Bay Avenue from the many visitors who walked past her house on a warm summer evening. Her commitment to politics and voter registration continued in Lewes in local, state and national elections and included her serving as a poll worker.
Her love for reading lead her to volunteering with the Lewes Public Library where her passion fueled the growth of the annual book sale into a major funding sourcing that continues today. In later years, Conny served as a circulation volunteer and weeding committee member. She would often be sought out on her nights behind the circulation desk, where she helped students and adults alike with research. Her appointment to the book selection committee was a source of great pride to her. Conny spent countless hours sitting in her kitchen looking out her bay windows, while pouring over various book reviews in preparation for the monthly book selection meetings. Members of the committee and past and current staff were her close friends and she enjoyed being a part of its short term and long term growth. Conny was humbled by being named the Volunteer of the Year in 2010.
Conny was preceded in death by her first husband Bill, and second husband Charles.
She is survived by her daughter, Andrea Macintire (Michael) of Palm Harbor, FL; two sons: Brian (Claire) of Olney, MD and Garrick (Debra) of Garnet Valley, PA; as well as seven grandchildren: Jeremy (Trisha), Ashley (Ryan), Tyler, Caroline, Alexandra “Allie”, Lauren and Alexis; and she was blessed with five great-grandchildren: Beaudy, Knox, McKinley, Caius and Madden.
The family would like to thank the Lewes Fire Department, and the nurses and doctors at Beebe Heathcare especially Nicole Gilmore and Kimberly Travis during her brief illness.
At the request of the deceased services were private.
In memory of Conny the family asks everyone to take the time to visit a library and check out a book. Memorial contributions may be made in Conny’s name to the Lewes Public Library, 111 Adams Avenue, Lewes DE 19958.
