Charles Otis Willoughby Jr.'s Obituary
Charles Otis Willoughby., a cherished husband, father, brother, and grandfather, passed away peacefully on November 1, 2024, at the age of 78 in Bridgeville, DE. Born on August 29, 1946, in Milford, DE, Charles was a man whose presence brought warmth and joy to all who knew him.
He is survived by his loving wife, Janice Johnson Willoughby, with whom he shared countless lunches and precious moments. His legacy continues through his sons, Chuck Willoughby ( Angie) and Bryan Willoughby; his brother, Bruce Willoughby (Gail); his granddaughter, Brooke Carpenter; nephews, Rob Willoughby (Becky) and Michael Willoughby; niece, Michele Willoughby; great-niece, Lily Grace Willoughby; and great-nephew, Luke Evans Willoughby. Charles was predeceased by his parents, Charles and Anna Willoughby; brothers, Stanley and Danny Willoughby; and granddaughter, Brittany McLoughlin.
Charles dedicated 32 years of service to Hearn Rawlins Feed mill, followed by 14 years at Mike Layton's Hardware Store. His commitment to his community was unwavering, having served as a part-time police officer for 20 years across Bridgeville, Greenwood, and Blades, DE. Captain of the Bridgeville Fire Police and his 13-year tenure with the State Fire Team. His passion for service was recognized when he was named Fireman of the Year in 2016 and one of the Top Responders of the Year in 2023. In 2024, he received an award for his service to the Apple Scrapple Festival, a testament to his enduring dedication.
An avid fisherman, Charles loved nothing more than spending time by the water, rod in hand. He was a man who loved talking to people, and his home was always open to friends and family. His role as a fireman was not just a job but a calling, and he was often described as the friendliest person one could ever meet.
Charles's life was marked by his loving, friendly, and thoughtful nature. He will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him. His memory will be cherished and kept alive through the stories and laughter he shared with so many.
Visitation for family and Friends will be held on Friday, November 15, 2024 from 11:00 AM -1:00 PM at Union Methodist Church 2 N. Laws Street, Bridgeville, DE 19933. A Memorial: Service will start at 1:00 PM. Interment will follow at Bridgeville Cemetery Market & Laws Streets Bridgeville, DE 19933.
