Charles J. "Red" McCormick's Obituary
Charles J. "Red" McCormick, 82, of Lewes, passed away peacefully on September 20, 2009. Red was born on February 21, 1927 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, son of the late Charles and Margaret McCormick. He graduated from Central Catholic High in Pittsburgh. At the age of seventeen, he enlisted in the United States Navy and was trained as a medical corpsman. Red served in the South Pacific theater of World War II. While preparing for the Japanese invasion, the war ended and he was sent to China with U.S. peace-keeping forces. He was recalled during the Korean War and later retired as a reserve officer. Returning to Pittsburgh, Red enrolled at the University of Pittsburgh, where he earned both bachelor's and graduate degrees. He went on to a distinguished career in industry as a corporate executive working for Allied Chemical and Dravo Industries, and later in Atlanta as a consulting environmental engineer specializing in the field of lime and limestone.
Red and his wife, Dolores, retired to Rehoboth Beach in 1999. He was a devoted husband and father. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Dolores N. McCormick. He is survived by his loving daughters Pamela M. Burger of Columbia, Maryland and Lewes, Delaware and Cynthia N. McCormick of Pittsburgh. Other survivors include his sister-in-law Mary Louise Foley and many nieces and nephews.
Red was a long time member and active supporter of the Southern Delaware Academy of Lifelong Learning (SDALL) in Lewes. He served on the governing council of SDALL for six years and was a principal fund-raiser for the Academy during its early years. He was also an active supporter of the "Best Buddies" program in Rehoboth Beach. Always kind to others, Red will be long-remembered by his many friends in the area.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, September 23, 2009, 11:00 AM at St. Edmond's Roman Catholic Church, King Charles and Laurel Streets, Rehoboth Beach, DE. Interment will be private. Arrangements are being handled by Parsell Funeral Homes & Crematorium, Lewes, DE.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to the Southern Delaware Academy of Lifelong Learning, 820A Savannah Road, Lewes, DE, 19958.
