Charles "Phil" H. Hurst Jr.'s Obituary
Charles "Phil" Hurst, age 83, of Lewes, DE passed away on Friday, November 11, 2016, at Harbor Healthcare & Rehab Center, in Lewes, DE. He was born Wednesday, September 27, 1933 in Camden, NJ, son of the late Charles H. Hurst, Sr. and Margaret Moore.
Mr. Hurst proudly served our country in the US Army and was a Korean War Veteran. He owned and operated Phil's Home Plate Sports Bar in Philadelphia before retiring to Lewes, afterwhich he was a bartender at the Patio Bar on the Cape May-Lewes Ferry for several years. Mr. Hurst was a Mason in both Philadelphia and Lewes and was a member of the Lewes VFW. He enjoyed painting at the Gull House, both playing and watching baseball, and coaching his sons. He was a lover of music and a dedicated Philadelphia sports fan. A longtime Eagles season ticket holder, the Eagles and the Phillies were among his favorite teams. Family was the cornerstone of his life, and spending time with his loved ones was what he cherished most. He was a devoted and loving husband, father, grandfather, and friend, who will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
Mr. Hurst is survived by his beloved wife of 41 years, Elvira (Kenney) Hurst; his sons: Philip Hurst and his wife Ginny of Millsboro, DE, Ryan Hurst and his wife Angie of Bel Air, MD, Joseph Garvey of Bucks County, PA, and Thomas Garvey of Rehoboth Beach, DE; his daughters: Barbara Jean Bollinger and her husband George of Millsboro, DE, Mary Ellen Hurst of Philadelphia, PA, Deborah Gudonis and her husband Edward of Mullica Hill, NJ, and Joanne Adinolfi and her husband Michael of Jameson, PA; his twenty grandchildren: Kayla, Phillip, Madelyn, Matthew, Jacqueline, Alexa, Brittany, Joseph, Amanda, Tyler, Autumn, Keith, Dustin, Brian, Keely, Ava, Kristen, Michael, Julianne, and Laura; and his great-grandchildren, Joseph and Mason.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 AM on Wednesday, November 16, 2016 at St. Edmond Catholic Church, 409 King Charles Avenue, Rehoboth Beach, where friends may visit beginning at 10:00 AM. All arrangements are being handled by Parsell Funeral Homes and Crematorium, Atkins-Lodge Chapel, Lewes, DE.
