Carolyn Jones Walsmith's Obituary
Carolyn Jones Walsmith passed away peacefully June 12, 2026, after a lifetime spent brightening the lives of all she touched with her vivacious personality and infectious enthusiasm.
Carolyn was born June 24, 1940 in West Pittston, Pa., to Harlan Yost Jones and Dorothy White Jones. Across the street from the Jones household sat the Walsmith residence, home to childhood friend J. Scott Walsmith. The two families would stay connected for life, as Scotty would later become her husband and life partner.
A few years after the births of her younger brothers Harley and Larry, the Walsmiths moved to Rehoboth and the Joneses moved to Harrisburg, where Carolyn attended John Harris High School and was proud to be selected for the marching bandfront as a sophomore.
As a child, Carolyn’s fiercely protective nature was first realized when she saved a classmate from abduction. When a man grabbed her friend, Carolyn resisted the natural impulse to run and save herself; rather, she tugged on her friend’s arm, fighting the would-be abductor until he released his grip and fled. Carolyn also saved an infant from drowning, another selfless act that brought her great pride throughout her life. As a young mother, she joined a bowling league. When she set her mind to do something, she was determined to do it well, and once bowled a perfect 300 game.
Carolyn later reconnected and married her childhood friend Scott, and they successfully raised a combined family of five children in their Rehoboth Beach home. Together, she and Scott owned and operated the popular Walsmith Variety Stores, mainstays of old Rehoboth and Bethany Beach.
Carolyn enjoyed assisting community organizations dedicated to spreading beauty and joy. For many years, she volunteered with Sussex Gardeners, filling roles on the board of directors, as recording secretary, corresponding secretary and with adult garden therapy. She also devoted much time to All Saints Episcopal Church, serving as president of the St. Boniface Chapter and with the ECW Women’s Organization, and managing the Christmas Shop and summer children’s Bible School.
Carolyn especially loved any time spent with her grandchildren. She was a wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, gardener, carpenter, painter, best friend and partner whose absence will always be missed but whose legacy has enriched the lives of all who loved her.
She is survived by her husband Scott; son David W. Yingling (Beverly) of Savannah, Ga.; daughters Laurie Y. Pixley (Roland) of Charlotte, N.C.; Terri L. Tappan (David) of Rehoboth Beach; Deborah Walsmith of San Antonio, Texas; and Karen J. Stoddart of Milton; 14 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren; her brothers Larry Jones and Harley Jones and their families; cousins and extended family members; and many friends throughout the Cape Region.
A Memorial Service will be held on Thursday, July 23, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at All Saints' Episcopal Church, 18 Olive Avenue, Rehoboth Beach, Delaware.
Visitation will begin at 10:00 a.m.
