Captain C. Sheldon's Obituary
Captain Clark (Pete) Sheldon, Delaware State Police, Retired, age 72, of Lewes, DE, passed away at his home on Wednesday, August 2, surrounded by his loving family.
Pete was raised in Gwinhurst, DE and graduated from Mt. Pleasant High School. He served three years with the U.S. Marine Corps. He joined the Delaware State Police in 1958 retiring in 1978 as Captain and Troop Commander of Troop 1 at which time Pete and his wife Carol moved to Lewes. He then attended Delaware Technical Community College from which he received two degrees in Criminal Justice and went on to serve as Chief of Police of Lewes from 1981 to 1985. Following his tour of duty with the City of Lewes, he orked part-time for the U.S. Customs Office.
Pete was a Starter at the Rehoboth Beach Country Club for 11 years which he thoroughly enjoyed. He was a 40 year member of Brandywine A.F. & M. 33 Masonic Lodge. He was also a member of the Sussex Pines Country Club and served on its Board of Directors. He was an avid golfer who enjoyed his many golf friends and vacations.
During his retirement years, Pete was one of the original owners of the Rose & Crown Restaurant in Lewes and he also owned the Mower Barn, a small lawn and garden Sales and Service Business, and he managed the Lewes Cycle Shop.
Pete is survived by his wife of 50 years, Carol Wood Sheldon, his best friend and golf partner; two sons William Sheldon of Lewes and David and his wife Joan Sheldon of Millsboro; a daughter Cathy Trethewey and her husband Bruce of Temple, Texas; a granddaughter Brittany Sheldon; and grandsons, Michael and Matthew Trethewey. He loved being with his family and grandchildren.
Funeral Services will be held Sunday, August 6, 2 PM, at Parsell Funeral Homes & Crematorium, Atkins-Lodge Chapel, 16961 Kings Highway, Lewes, where friends may call from 12:30 PM till service time. Pastor Randy Booth will be officiating. Burial with State Police Honors will follow the services at Conley's Chapel Cemetery, Lewes.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to Conley's Methodist Church Building Fund, 22150 Robinsonville Road, Lewes, DE 19958 or to Delaware Hospice, 20167 Office Circle, Georgetown, DE 19947 or to the Delaware State Police Museum , C/O Troop 2, Dover, Delaware 19901.
