Dear Joan,
As I said in our phone conversation, I'm so sorry to hear of Ray's passing. He was a wonderful friend. Ray and I first met at the Naval Academy and spent our early careers in close proximity to each other. Our days at PG School in Monterey were memorable. Carolyn and I spent many afternoons at your home with your barbeque in full use. Those are the days that we will always remember. Golf at the Pacific Grove Municipal Golf Course and the long Fort Ord Course were Ray's passion and he and I sure enjoyed challenging those together. George
I met Ray at his wife's high school reunion. My condolences to his wife and family.
This is part of what we already wrote to Joan but repeated now to share with others.
Ray was a bon vivant and it was always great fun to be with him. He loved Joan, he loved the Navy and he loved his country.
Ray and I started post-Navy employment at about the same time at the Vitro Corporation. We leaned heavily on each other as we worked through the awkward first year of transition into a civilian world of no rank and few traditions. It was an 8-5 world to which neither was accustomed. We forged a common bond and friendship. Out of it grew a broader circle of new friends and eventually our theater group in DC and suburban Maryland. We remember Joan took up golf to share leisure time with Ray when leisure time finally became possible. Joan soon excelled at the sport which engendered a mixture of pride and just a tad of jealousy in Ray. Ray became a rare bird - a republican elected to the assembly in Maryland from the DC suburbs. We were disappointed that he remained true to his promise (also rare in MD politics) and served only one term. Realistically he knew there was little future for republicans in MD elected office. It was probably a lonesome job.
We remember the wonderful social affairs in their home to which we were often invited. Their natural skills as hosts were enhanced by the experience of several diplomatic tours. Most of all, we remember couples dinners at The Amalfi. They were such a fun tradition which was uniquely ours. God speed with fair winds and following seas Ray.
So very sorry for your loss.
The Ramsey High School Class of 1953, of whom his wife Joan is a memeber, offers its condolences to Joan, their children, and all family members.
