Barbara Rose Johnson's Obituary
Barbara Rose Johnson, age 91, passed away at her home in Rehoboth Beach, DE on Monday, May 28, 2018 after a short illness. She was born in Lakewood, NJ on March 23, 1927. She moved to Downingtown, Pennsylvania in 1968 and lived there until she retired in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware in 1995.
She was united in holy matrimony to Andrew Suarez Johnson, her high school sweetheart, on September 6th, 1947. She sang Happy Birthday to her beloved husband two days before her death as he celebrated his 91st birthday. They celebrated 70 years of marriage last September and their love and devotion for each other was evident to all.
Though Barbara was an only child she leaves her legacy behind in her 7 children, 22 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her mother: Bessie McLain who lived to 107 years old.
After raising her 7 children she started nursing school and graduated at the age of 50. Starting at a young age she was an accomplished artist who has gifted her artwork over the years to her children and grandchildren. She was an active member of St. Georges Episcopal Chapel and had many volunteer duties within the church. She was happiest snuggling on the couch with her husband, sitting on the beach with her floppy sun hat surrounded by family and enjoying the sunshine on her deck with a cat on her lap and a glass of wine in her hand.
Her beautiful life will forever be cherished in the lives of her children: Jeffrey Johnson of Broadkill Beach, DE, Laura (Norman) Myer of Atmore, AL, Valerie (Randy) Dymond of Blacksburg, VA, Christina (Tom) Costello of Havertown, PA, Johanna (Russell) Edwards of Coatesville, PA Victor (Daryl) Johnson of Glenmore, PA and Michael (Beki) Johnson of Downingtown, PA; her grandchildren: Jeff, Brendon, Doug, Marty, Toby, Joshua, Daryl, Matthew, Ben, Molly, Sara, Kerry, Pamela, Maureen, Jennifer, Alex, Greg, Corey, Alyssa, Erica, Michael and Taylor; and her 18 great-grandchildren.
Barbara was a loving and caring person, devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother and always thinking of others first. To know her was to love her.
Her life will be celebrated at a memorial Service on Sunday, June 24th, 2018 at 4 pm at St. Georges Episcopal Chapel, 20274 Beaver Dam Road, Harbeson, DE. In lieu of flowers memorials can be made in Barbara’s name to: Meals on Wheels Lewes-Rehoboth (32409 Lewes Georgetown Highway, Lewes, DE 19958) or Greater Lewes Community Village (16686 Kings Highway Suite B, Lewes, DE. 19958): two volunteer organizations that supported Barbara to continue living in her home at the age of 91.
