I am blessed to have so many wonderful memories with my sweet grandmother, whom I loved dearly.
Throughout my life, my grandmother has always been there for my parents, my sisters, and myself.
Some of my favorite memories of spending time with my grandmother include visiting St. Louis to see where my grandparents grew up, going to my grandfather’s West Point reunions to meet their closest friends, the Greenbrier, our trip to Key West where my mother was born, and stopping by my grandparents’ house to see them very often. Many of my favorite memories are also in Lewes including going to the beach, getting ice cream together, watching TMC movies, going to the booth, and even listening to Julio Iglesias in the car. I loved going to Lewes Night Out - my grandmother was lucky and would win the raffle every year!
I felt so fortunate that my grandmother was able to travel to Virginia Tech to watch me march in the Corps of Cadets’ parade. At the conclusion of the parade, she had tears in her eyes.
Even when I was gone at school or for the Army, my grandmother never felt too far away. I would receive a letter almost every week from my grandmother saying how proud she was of me... even in the woods of Kentucky and in Sri Lanka. Even in the hardest days of my training, my grandmother could make me smile. She would always get my address so we could write each other wherever I went.
My grandmother once wrote a letter to the Colonel of Virginia Tech Army ROTC and told him I should earn the award for being the top cadet in my company. When I did, all she said was “I knew it!”
These memories, these letters that I have saved, photos throughout the years... are priceless and irreplaceable. I will treasure these for the rest of my life. Rest In Peace with grandpa.
Love,
Jocelyn
