Anne J. McShane's Obituary
Anne J. McShane, age 86 of Rehoboth Beach, DE passed away on Friday, January 13, 2017, at her home. She was born on Monday, January 27, 1930 in New York, NY, daughter of the late Joseph and Matilda (Grant) Gerard.
Mrs. McShane was born and raised in New York. In 1954 she married the love of her life, William, and moved to Freeport Long Island, where together they opened and ran a service station. They moved to Deer Park in 1957, where they lived and raised their five children. Mrs. McShane earned a Master’s Degree in Special Education from Hofstra University and for many years taught at Wyandanch Middle School, on Long Island. After a fulfilling career in teaching, she worked actively in the Suffolk County Government as an administrator for Congressman Gary Ackerman, was an assistant to the Commissioner for the Board of Elections, and ran the Office of the Aging. She remained active in politics until retiring in 2013 and relocating to Delaware. Mrs. McShane enjoyed traveling, dancing and singing, and was always the life of the party. A selfless nurturer, she always put everyone ahead of herself. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother who will be deeply missed.
In addition to her parents, Mrs. McShane was preceded in death by her daughter, Marianne Cowell; and her brother, Joseph Gerard. She is survived by her beloved husband of 62 years, William A. McShane; her sons: William J. McShane (MaryEllen) of Babylon, NY, and Michael McShane (Lyndee DeMeo) of Rehoboth Beach, DE; her daughters: Rosemary McShane (Marshall Kannert) of NY, NY, and Elizabeth Fonseca (Mark) of Rehoboth Beach, DE; her grandchildren: Jacquelyn, Benjamin, Savannah, Katharine, William, Megan, and Jeremy; and her great-grandchildren: Selene, Silias, Sophia, and Ferdinand.
All services will be private. Arrangements are being handled by Parsell Funeral Homes and Crematorium, Atkins-Lodge Chapel, Lewes, DE.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions in Anne McShane's memory to Cape Henlopen Senior Center Building Fund, 11 Christian Street, Rehoboth, DE 19971.
