Anne R. Avondolio's Obituary
Anne R. Avondolio, 85, loving wife of Donald E. Avondolio, passed away quietly on July 3, 2024.
Anne was born in Blantyre Scotland on July 20,1938 to John and Anne (Miller) Clyde. Following her mother’s untimely death, she was raised along with her older sister Catherine by her father and aunt and uncle Mary and Sam McCutcheon in Queens, NY.
Anne, a devout Catholic, graduated from Dominican High School in 1956 and immediately went to work as a secretary. She met her husband Don at a church dance in 1957 and got married two short years later in 1959. Don was a Design Engineer who worked for several defense contractors following his graduation from Haaren Technical High School and attending drafting school and Polytechnic College of Engineering in Brooklyn.
The family moved out to Long Island in the mid ‘60s, where they raised their five children after Don got a job with Grumman Aircraft Engineering. Anne made many friends on Long Island and is remembered for her amazing sense of humor, love of music, word games, dancing and most importantly, her family. Anne was a very caring person who lived a very busy life working for the Commack School District while still finding time to chauffeur her children and their friends to and from events throughout their school years. Being a mother of five children never seemed to overwhelm Anne. She welcomed her children’s friends into her home and often added a plate or two to the family dinner when unexpected guests arrived at the house.
When Don and Anne became empty nesters and Don retired in1994, they decided to move to Lewes. They built a beautiful home in Delaware where they made new friends and got involved in many community events. Anne loved to go out for meals and get together with neighbors to play Mahjong weekly. Anne had a love for reading as well and was rarely seen without a pencil in her hand trying to figure out the daily Cryptoquote or crossword puzzle. Unfortunately, Anne suffered from dementia over several years and spent the last 22 months at the Harrison House following a fall and breaking her hip. The family is extremely grateful to the doctors, nurses and aides at the Harrison House that did their best to keep Anne in good spirits through this especially tough time.
Anne is survived by her loving husband Don who dedicated himself to taking care of his beautiful wife during the time that she needed him most. She is also survived by son Mike and his wife Donna, son Don and his wife Van, son John and his wife Kelly, daughter Patricia and son James and his wife Annie, and 12 grandchildren Dani, Stephen, Emily, Matt, Gillian, Jack, Fiona, Isaac, Magnus, Matthew, Stella and Miles and two great grandchildren Nora and Serena.
