Alina Krystyna Hofman's Obituary
On May 15, 2023, Alina passed away peacefully surrounded by her family in Christiana, DE. Alina was born in Poland in 1941, as the youngest child of Bronislaw Jurkiewicz and Konstancja Lewandowska. Boguslaw and Stefania were her siblings. Her father was the train station master in Rabino, Poland and her mother was a midwife.
Alina worked at the train station assisting passengers. In 1966 she met the love of her life, Walter, who was doing military service. Since then, they saw each other every day until his passing.
In 1967 Alina and Walter got married in Koszalin, a city located 7 miles south of the Baltic Sea coast. Two years after their marriage, they moved to Bielsko-Biala, a city in the south of Poland closer to Walter’s parents. They had two children: Daniel and Magdalena. They sometimes traveled by train to visit Alina’s parents and siblings in the north of Poland.
In Bielsko-Biala, Walter was the Chairman of Solidarity, a movement that opposed the communist Polish regime. During those times Alina also played a role in the Solidarity struggle. Walter was persecuted by the Communist government and, as a result, he was forced to leave Poland and go into exile. Alina, Walter and their children immigrated, as political refugees, to the United States in 1982. They arrived in Philadelphia where they lived for five years before moving to Bridgeville, DE.
In the United States, Alina worked as a seamstress for many years. She was also a homemaker and an excellent host. Alina always brought the family together and she enjoyed celebrating holidays and special occasions. She prepared delicious meals for family and friends with whom she made memories that will live on in their hearts forever. Through Alina’s love, her actions, her words and her life, she taught everyone around her to be loving, kind and generous.
Alina was preceded in death by her beloved husband Walter. She is survived by her son Daniel, her daughter-in-law Ines, her daughter Magdalena, her son-in-law Curtis, and her grandchildren Alexander (Katie), Christyn (Jacob), Jon, Spencer and Zachary (Kayla). They all say that Alina gave them the best gift they could have which was to be loved unconditionally. Her love for them and their love for her will endure for eternity.
