Albert S. Lenox's Obituary
Albert S. Lenox passed away peacefully at his home in Georgetown, DE on the morning of October 7, 2015. He was 95 years old. He is survived by his daughter, Joann Erenhouse, seven grandchildren, sixteen great-grandchildren (with a seventeenth on the way), and his brother, Kenneth Lenox. He was preceded in death by his wife, Madeline Lenox, and daughter, Ellen Thompson.
Mr. Lenox was born in Philadelphia, PA on May 10, 1920. After graduating from high school and working for Radio Condenser, he enlisted for service in World War II. He ended up flying airplanes for the Air Force. His stories of those times always focused on the escapades and adventures, while never emphasizing the personal sacrifice. It was with quiet humility that he served his country, as was the case for so many of his generation.
After returning home, Mr. Lenox followed his passion and began to play music on a full-time basis. He was an accomplished pianist, talented arranger and composer, and natural mediator, which made him a perfect band member. His groups, including Freddie Gray and the Graytones, were sell-out hits at night clubs all over the eastern seaboard and Gulf of Mexico.
In the early 1950's, Mr. Lenox left the full-time music business, and he and his lifelong friend, Vince Sears, moved from the Arrow Safety Devices home office in Mt Holly, NJ to open the company's plant in Georgetown, DE. Mr. Sears served as General Manager, and Mr. Lenox was the Plant and Production Manager. Mr. Lenox worked with Arrow for the rest of his professional career, while continuing to play music on the side. In his later years, he was especially touched to hear from his former employees how well and fairly they felt he always had treated them.
A fervent Philadelphia sports fan, Mr. Lenox would wear his Phillies or Eagles hat around town, and he always enjoyed the conversation that might spark with those he met on his daily errands.
Mr. Lenox already is terribly missed by his family and friends. Their memories are rich with his piano concerts (which were enjoyed right until the end), his colorful stories, and his humor. His life was an example of optimism, kindness, and generosity.
Those who knew him are invited to a Celebration of Life on Sunday, October 25 from 2:00 to 4:00 PM at the Redden Lodge at the Redden State Forrest, 18074 Redden Forest Drive, Georgetown, DE 19947. Interment will be private.
