Susan hired me into EPA as a grad student intern in June 2010, and she and Jack Housenger were my first bosses. She is the reason I’ve been able to build a Federal career, and at EPA.

Susan had the kindest soul. Along with being incredibly smart and quick, Susan believed in people and their abilities, and in working to make the world a better place.

Over the years, Susan became a trusted mentor and a dear friend. We regularly caught up, even after her retirement from EPA in August 2016. She’s who I’d call to get insight from on a challenging work or career situation, and to share in the celebrations of life. We loved sharing book recommendations and talking about community service. Susan is who sent my daughter Violet the best little learning library of books when she was born in July 2022.

My heart and deepest sympathies go out to John + Susan’s siblings, nieces, and nephews, especially during this holiday season. May Susan’s memory always be a blessing, and may she know how much we all miss and love her as she looks down on us from above.

I met Susan at EPA and we worked together for many years in the OPP. Susan was a consummate pro. She knew the regs and policies cold. One of her proudest achievements was her work to cancel chlorfenapyr, the next generation DDT. She respected the science and moved forward on the cancellation process when her superiors watched from behind the scenes. She was “green” in her heart and soul. She believed in the mission. EPA was lucky to have her. She is gone too soon. We miss her. My deepest sympathies to John and her family.

Susan was my boss for ten years and my friend for more than 20. She was five days older than me and years wiser. I learned so much from her about good management and owe her a great deal for advocating for me. She cared about people and the “work mission” and always seemed to do the right thing with poise, grace and humor. We shared many stories about our families, our dogs, and books. A big piece of my heart has gone with her. I am so sorry for your loss and pray that your memories of Susan will comfort and bless you.

I fell blessed to be able to be with Susan in her last hours in our world. Susan was a dear friend who lived with me and my pets in the early 80's. She was a warm, caring, pragmatic women who I admired. She made a big impact on my family in inviting my former husband to apply to the EPA, where he climbed the ladder, and provided our family job security. Susan touched so many in her time on earth and will be remembered by us all.

I worked with Susan in the Pesticide Program at EPA for 20 years and we did some great things together. She was smart, fair, wise, and made courageous decisions. Susan didn’t look for easy solutions and was open to trying new ways of doing things to protect the environment. Without Susan, we could not have worked through the cancellation of carbofuran, an insecticide that is exquisitely poisonous to birds. Susan was a great leader and cared deeply about public service and the people she worked with. On top of that, it was great fun to share stories with her over a glass or two of chardonnay. Susan had a great smile and an infectious laugh and I will miss her terribly. I send my deep condolences to her family. Betsy

I met Susan at the first St Vincent de Paul meeting I attended here in Bethany Beach. From that first meeting we shared Treasury duties but our favorite activity with the group was working with our Team 2 Food Pantry friends and meeting our neighbors who came to the pantry. I was so fortunate to have had many wonderful conversations with Susan about our organization as well as books, current events, seaglass, family and friends. She was a wealth of information and a joy to be with. Our hearts and prayers are with her and John and her family ❤️🙏. Helen Simmons
