Helen (Wini) Gates, 84, of Milton, DE passed away peacefully in her sleep on Tuesday, April 9, 2024, after complications from a stroke in mid-February. Helen was born on Nov. 9, 1939, to Samuel West Jr. and Virginia West in S. Ch Read Obituary

We met Helen (Wini to us) in 1969 when we were all working in the New Castle School District. She took us under her wing, taught us to ski, and spearheaded many weekend trips to New England mountains. When we moved to NH she visited often, helped us build our house, and eventually moved also. She and her ex-husband, John, were the ones that set us on our own course of oversea teaching. Whenever we were together, my John often referred to her as his second wife and adopted sister. We obviously have continued our friendship for many years and her passing will leave a hole in our lives.

We met Helen in Pakistan in I987 and from then formed a lasting friendship. We were notorious dinner party table-mates and consumed our share of wine 🍷. Over the years we visited with her at friends in Long Island, went skiing at her place in NH, enjoyed our time with her in Delaware and hosted her when she stayed with us in Virginia. She had a heart as broad as the miles she travelled over the years. Helen, you will be missed — Suprabha (Supi) and Gene (Gino) George.
