Elizabeth "Liz" Jean Haygreen
February 13, 1931 - February 8, 2022
Elizabeth “Liz” Jean Haygreen, age 90 passed away peacefully on Tuesday, February 8, 2022 at The Moorings in Lewes. She was born on February 13, 1931 in Primghar IA, daughter of the late Henry and Janette (Lamb) Reager. She was raised on the family’s Iowa Farm, the oldest of four daughters. She attended Iowa State University where she met the love of her life, John Haygreen, and they were married in 1952. Liz and John had two sons and a daughter. When they moved to MN, Liz went back to finish her degree in Nutrition and Dietetics from the University of Minnesota in 1968. Liz and her husband raised their family in MI, CO, and MN. The family loved the outdoors and had many camping and canoeing trips in the Boundary Waters and other favorite spots in the Rockies and the Great Lakes region. Liz and her husband loved the Caribbean and traveled to many islands as a break from the cold MN winters! They were avid cross-country skiers at that time but were getting ready for warmer living. They retired to Auburn, AL where Liz and her husband built a home on a golf course in the Stillwaters community. They had a wonderful group of friends who shared many golfing adventures during that chapter of their lives. They were very active in Red Ridge United Methodist Church, and Liz was the pianist there for many years. In 2012, after her husbands’ passing, Liz moved to The Moorings in Lewes (Then Cadbury). Liz was only a few minutes away from her daughter, and it was wonderful for both to share the last 10 years - holidays, birthdays, walks around town, and just being together. Liz loved her Moorings Family, and her family is so grateful for the wonderful people that helped Liz through her journey; from independent living initially, to increased levels of care before she passed. She really felt at home there. Liz was always busy. She loved to garden, sew, knit, read, and she was a wonderful cook. She was happiest around her family and looked forward to every family get together with joy! Her three grandsons always made her smile, and she had the ability to make everyone feel loved. She was a kind, compassionate soul who will be sorely missed as a mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her beloved husband, John Haygreen in 2010; her son, Mark Haygreen in 1985; her sisters: Dorothy Eads and Anna O'Brien; and her brother-in-law, James Haygreen. Liz is survived by her son, Jim Haygreen, (Janice); her daughter, Lisa Nelson (John); her grandsons: John Haygreen, Alden Nelson (Jenn), and Ryan Nelson; her sister, Lillian Baker; her sister-in-law, Charlotte Haygreen and many nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, February 26, 2022 at 2:00 PM, at Bethel United Methodist Church, 129 W. 4th St., Lewes, DE. A visitation will follow after the service in the Fellowship Hall. In lieu of flowers, the family recommends memorial contributions may be made in Liz’s memory, to your local food bank.
