Bernard J. “Bernie” Fiegel, 87, of Lewes, Delaware passed away on Friday, March 27, 2020, at the Delaware Hospice Center in Milford. He was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on August 20, 1932 and lived in East Providence, Rhode I Read Obituary
Remembering Bernie in so many Lifelong Learning classes such as making hors de ovres, tasting and sipping wine, opera and trips to Delaware Symphony or Delaware Opera and him serving at the annual OLLI picnic. Always volunteering with his wife Delores and enriching all of our lives. A great loss to our community. Condolences to Delores and the family.

Bernie was a real character who touched many lives. He was very generous with his time and sharing his vast experience in many areas. He and his wife put together cooking classes at their lovely home. Their organization and ability to divide up the work was exceptionally impressive. They were giving out helpful hints and wonderful recipes for us. I have 10 different jars of Penzeys spices which are delicious due to his suggestions.
He also was an expert dancer and during his last dances he was in pain and I was surprised at his economy of movement as he danced. He was a real inspiration.

I am so sorry to hear of your loss. I did not know your husband well, but he always greeted me cheerfully at Osher. I guess I was not made for the 21st century. I want to reach out and hug, maybe attend a service, come over with a cake or casserole, etc. I realize none of those are appropriate or possible at the moment. I actually salute you for postponing the public service. People want to express their condolences, but this is not the time for gatherings. Just before such gatherings were banned, my husband had to weigh the decision of attending such a gathering for someone he worked with. I convinced him, it was not worth the risk as they were hardly close. But I believe the point of such gatherings is to help the bereaved by acknowledging and sharing their loss and so I believe this is a particularly difficult time to lose someone. I am a Quaker and one of the things I most cherish about my chosen faith is the memorial services. I always learn things about the deceased-even if I knew the person well. After all, a sibling knows a person in a different way. The tribute to the person is usually beautiful and you leave feeling better as the life has been truly celebrated.

Bernie was such a wonderful and interesting individual. His knowledge of food and wine made his classes so much fun. He was always willing to help with any task. He will be deeply missed. Our sympathy goes out to Delores.

I am sipping a glass of a very special Washington State red blend as I write this and remember Bernie. I think he would have enjoyed this wine, and would certainly have been able and willing to enlighten me about it. I will miss seeing and chatting with him at Osher and Coastal Concerts. I'm truly sorry for you and your family, and for the Lewes community in general, to read that Bernie has left this earth. I recall your years of dedication and kindness together, at Osher and Coastal Concerts - for which you accepted a donated flute from me when I first moved there. Together you've given so much to the community, and had fun doing it. I know you'll continue doing that for as long as you can, and be as loved and appreciated as ever. I live in Virginia now, but have not forgotten you and the pleasure of your and Bernie's wit and company. Peace and grace at this time, and in the coming days and months, to you and your family.
